Exploring the Tranquility of Puerto Angel: A Coastal Retreat

As I lounged in a hammock, enjoying the gentle morning light and the soothing sounds of the ocean, I couldn’t help but feel at peace. The nearby gardener was tending to the vibrant bougainvillea that lined the pathways, and our morning greeting in Spanish was followed by an unexpected revelation: “Hay una ballena”—“There’s a whale.” I turned just in time to witness the majestic creature breach the surface of the water, a spectacular splash marking its descent back into the depths. This experience, though extraordinary, is not rare during whale season along the Oaxacan coast, where such sights are common for those who call this region home. My visit to this part of Mexico marked my first encounter with a coastline reminiscent of Big Sur in California—rugged, stunning, and serene.

The coastline stretching from Puerto Escondido, a bustling beach town, is rich with unique vistas and experiences, but my choice to stay in the quaint fishing village of Puerto Angel at Casa Baori proved to be a reward in itself. This tranquil town may lack numerous dining options and nightlife, but its simplicity adds to its allure. Our arrival by car provided the freedom to discover nearby, more vibrant locales like Zipolite and Mazunte. Nestled just a 15-minute walk from the tranquil Playa Puerto Angel—the local beach where fishermen bring in their daily catch—Casa Baori allowed us to embrace the true essence of coastal living. This small cove, adorned with colorful lounge chairs and beach umbrellas, offers opportunities for whale watching and exploring secluded beaches only accessible by boat.

Casa Baori was an ideal choice for our stay in Puerto Angel, as we found ourselves perfectly content within its confines. The property stands out with its elegant design, incorporating natural materials such as jute, wood, and stone to harmonize with the rocky coastal landscape. Upon our arrival, I eagerly stepped through the sliding doors of our bungalow, greeted by the breathtaking view of the shimmering Pacific framed by our terrace. Three stylish lounge chairs awaited us, providing an uninterrupted panorama of endless blue waters.

Despite being part of a larger communal villa, the privacy and intimacy of our two-bedroom bungalow were palpable. It was self-catering and equipped with all necessary amenities, including a kitchen, a coffee machine, a dining area, and a surround sound system to enhance our morning coffee experience.

A highlight of our three-night stay was undoubtedly the complimentary daily breakfast. This was no ordinary spread; it rivaled the offerings of high-end restaurants. We gathered at a beautifully carved wooden communal table overlooking the ocean, where we were treated to steaming pots of local Oaxacan coffee and freshly baked bread paired with extraordinary mango and mandarin jams. Each day brought a new culinary experience from a rotating breakfast menu that showcased local Mexican flavors. The delightful aroma of fresh corn tortillas being fried for chilaquiles mingled with the scents of chili, coriander, and lime, thanks to the efforts of three kind women preparing our meals.

For those inclined to explore further culinary delights, Casa Baori offered private cooking services, as well as access to a stunning communal kitchen featuring natural wood and high-tech appliances. On our final evening, fellow guests returned from the local beach, their laughter filling the air as they shared tales of catching snapper from the day’s haul to concoct their own dinner. Had our time allowed it, we would have happily joined in their adventure.

Every aspect of our stay was meticulously crafted: shared spaces included a serene meditation area complete with hammocks, a bar, a mini kitchen to prepare drinks, a firepit, a cozy living and reading room, a co-working space, and a breathtaking infinity pool overlooking the ocean. With such beauty surrounding us, it was tempting to remain in this secluded paradise forever. Ultimately, however, like the magnificent whales greeting me each morning, I too had to journey across the ocean back home.
