Upcoming Releases: Sailesh Kolanu’s HIT: The Third Case and Karthik Subbaraj’s Retro Rated for Strong Violence

Nani’s HIT: The Third Case and Suriya’s Retro are set for a global release on May 1, both receiving a ‘strong’ violence rating from the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC).

Directed by Sailesh Kolanu, HIT: The Third Case features Nani in a prominent role, while Karthik Subbaraj’s Retro stars Suriya. The BBFC has highlighted the intensity of the violence along with the graphic language and horror elements present in each narrative.

According to the BBFC description, the plot of HIT 3 revolves around a renegade police officer who becomes ensnared in a chilling series of murders he is tasked with solving.

Both films have received stringent ratings for ‘violence’ and ‘injury detail,’ in addition to facing similar evaluations for ‘threat and horror,’ ‘language,’ as well as ‘suicide and self-harm.’ These ratings draw parallels to Unni Mukundan’s recent Malayalam film Marco, noted for being exceptionally violent.

Further insights indicate that HIT: The Third Case and Retro showcase extended sequences of graphic violence, including scenes depicting stabbing, shooting, and dismemberment. They also contain moments of strong language interspersed with milder expressions. Trailers suggest unsettling portrayals of trafficking, sex work, harassment, and the imminent danger posed to children.

Retro’s plot summary from the BBFC states that a former criminal, who had vowed to abandon his violent lifestyle, must revert to his old ways to rescue his estranged wife from perilous foes in this Tamil-language action thriller.

Both films are rated high for factors such as ‘violence,’ ‘threat and horror,’ and ‘language,’ while receiving moderate assessments for ‘drugs,’ ‘sex,’ and ‘sexual violence.’

Reports have revealed unsettling sequences, including a brief yet graphic torture scene in both HIT: The Third Case and Retro, where characters experience extreme physical harm. One particularly harrowing moment involves a newborn being branded, as well as a flashback containing scenes involving cultists and infants. Although drugs are mentioned, the films do not advocate their use but depict distressing scenarios involving women and children.

HIT 3 is the third entry in a successful franchise, previously featuring actors like Vishwak Sen and Adivi Sesh as detectives untangling enigmatic murders. Nani’s character, Arjun Sarkaar, was first introduced at the end of HIT 2, and rumors suggest a special appearance by a recognized Tamil star. Srinidhi Shetty also makes her Telugu film debut as the leading female character.

Conversely, Retro features Suriya along with Pooja Hegde in key roles and includes performances by Joju George and Jayaram, contributing to the film’s dynamic narrative.
