William Byron: A Path to Championship with Unconventional Roots
William Byron, driver of the Hendrick Motorsports No. 24 car, is often described as a “normal guy.” However, this weekend he finds himself in the extraordinary position of competing for the NASCAR Cup Series championship at Phoenix Raceway, one of just four remaining contenders.
Byron’s journey to the pinnacle of NASCAR is anything but typical. He transitioned from sim racing, where he built a considerable reputation in iRacing, to the professional racing circuit. His entry into this Championship Four was also marked by an unconventional turn of events; he advanced after Christopher Bell was disqualified from the playoffs due to a safety penalty during the Martinsville race. This incident occurred while Byron’s fellow Chevrolet teammates faced criticism for making Bell’s final effort to challenge for a spot more difficult.
Despite the unexpected twists, Byron’s dedicated work throughout the season, complemented by an intense focus on physical fitness, has propelled him forward. In earlier years, particularly his rookie season in 2018, fitness was not a priority for him. However, his commitment to improving his physical condition has been a game changer this year, coinciding notably with his triumph at the Daytona 500.
“Before this year, I didn’t really enjoy working out,” Byron admits. “Now, though, I see it as a crucial element of my performance, ensuring I am strong and reliable for my team.” He emphasizes the importance of not being a weak link, viewing fitness as integral to his racing success.
A Look into Byron’s Training Regimen
What’s a typical workout week like for William Byron?
Byron’s workouts involve a mix of running and strength training, tailored to enhance his performance. “It’s really whatever makes me feel the best,” he notes, acknowledging that his evolving passion for fitness has enriched his daily life.
Did your growing interest in fitness lead to an addiction?
He replies that the benefits of physical activity are what drew him in. “It helps me in the car, improves my day-to-day mood, and enhances my sleep quality. Overall, it’s been a positive change.”
Is there a specific fitness focus for you right now?
“Running has gained new significance,” Byron shares. Once an activity he dreaded, running has now become a source of enjoyment, whether jogging in his neighborhood or participating in run clubs. He also finds camaraderie in lifting weights with friends who have returned to Charlotte after college, incorporating interval training and hill runs into his routine. “This season, I’ve really fallen in love with it.”
Do you have a personal trainer?
“Yes, I do,” he confirms, recognizing the value of structure while emphasizing that true commitment to fitness must come from within. A good foundation can be laid with guidance, but personal motivation is crucial for sustained improvements.
Experiencing the Impact of Fitness
What benefits have you noticed in the car from focusing on fitness?
“It varies for everyone,” Byron remarks with a hint of playfulness, “but for me, it’s about enhancing my capability as a teammate.”
When do you usually work out? Morning or evening?
“I prefer to work out later in the day, around 5 or 6 PM,” he reveals. He finds that this routine helps him wind down and prepares him for sleep.
Mental health plays a significant role in racing, especially with a long season ahead.
“Absolutely,” Byron agrees, noting the various systems he employs to maintain focus and well-being. He values sleep highly and has established a precise routine to support his mental health throughout the NASCAR season, which stretches across 38 weekends and demands significant mental fortitude.
Navigating Diet and Nutrition
How important is diet to you? Are you mindful of what you eat?
Byron admits that nutrition has been something he is still working on. Although he tends to eat what he wants, he has begun to make more conscious choices during race weekends. “That’s an area where I can improve,” he adds, indicating that diet is the final piece he’s focusing on this offseason.
Years ago, you mentioned eating Pop Tarts for breakfast every day. Is that still true?
“I’ve definitely cut back,” he says, laughing. “Now I’m a big fan of breakfast, particularly omelets. It’s crucial for starting my day right.”
What does a typical race day meal look like for you?
For races, Byron sticks to straightforward meals like grilled chicken, broccoli, and rice. “I keep it simple and avoid anything too spicy, which helps prevent an upset stomach during events.”
The Role of Sim Racing in Preparation
Sim racing has played a significant role in your story. Do you find sim prep or fitness prep more beneficial for race week?
“Sim racing isn’t my main focus during the season anymore,” Byron explains, highlighting his reliance on real data and in-car cameras. He acknowledges that workout routines are now integral to his overall preparation, aided by technology like the Whoop band to monitor his recovery and heart rate.
Has your approach to sleep evolved over time?
“Absolutely. While I’ve always valued sleep, I’ve become more organized about my bedtimes as I’ve aged.”
Looking Toward the Future
As the championship race nears, what does winning mean to you?
“Hoisting that trophy would be a career-defining moment,” Byron reflects. “It’s something we strive for always. With the right team and mindset, I believe we’re capable of achieving championships, and now is the perfect time to start.”
