Nashville’s Ascend Amphitheater is set to welcome a new operational leadership team.
Metro Nashville has indicated its intention to appoint Ryman Hospitality Properties (RHP), specifically its Opry Entertainment Group (OEG), to manage the amphitheater for a forthcoming ten-year period. This decision is pending successful negotiations between the involved parties. The news was initially disclosed by Axios.
Colin Reed, the executive chairman of RHP’s board, conveyed to Billboard that he anticipates negotiations will wrap up within three months, with the new contract taking effect on January 1, 2026. This opportunity represents a long-held aspiration for RHP, which dates back to before the venue opened in 2015. Reed noted, “We applied for this a decade ago when the city was deciding to build [Ascend]. We and Live Nation submitted bids back then. Our appreciation for the venue has only deepened over time.”
RHP has already allocated funds aimed at enhancing the venue. Reed expressed intentions to “beautify the project,” enhancing the overall visitor experience.
The selection of RHP came in preference to competitors Live Nation and AEG. Reed remarked on the challenge of competing against such reputable companies, saying, “We felt confident in our proposal, but it was gratifying to surpass two respected firms — AEG, which we partner with for ticketing across our venues, and Live Nation, with whom we have established a solid rapport.”
Ascend Amphitheater has historically hosted between 20 to 30 concerts annually, predominantly during the summer months. However, Reed is keen on significantly increasing the venue’s activities year-round.
Initially, a cap of 35 shows per year was instituted due to the venue’s proximity to residential areas. Reed emphasized the potential for year-round engagement, stating, “This venue occupies prime real estate in Nashville. We aim to utilize the remaining 330 days a year effectively. Daytime programming and events like Opry Under the Stars could make this space vibrant. We have also engaged in discussions with the symphony regarding various collaborative opportunities. Additionally, we plan to introduce festive programming during the holiday season, extending from Thanksgiving through December.”
The amphitheater will remain open for other promoters, including AEG and Live Nation, to host events. Reed emphasized the importance of fostering positive relationships with these companies: “We’re open to discussions with anyone interested in showcasing talent in this remarkable city.”
Ryman Hospitality’s OEG also oversees notable Nashville venues such as the Ryman Auditorium and the Grand Ole Opry House, while maintaining partnerships with Luke Combs‘ Category 10 venue and Blake Shelton’s Ole Red.
As of now, Live Nation has not responded to inquiries regarding this development.
