John Nolan Faces New Challenges in Season 7 Premiere of The Rookie
In the latest season of The Rookie, star Nathan Fillion portrays John Nolan as a man grappling with intense frustration. The source of his conflict stems from the unsettling presence of his wife Bailey’s sociopathic ex-husband, Jason, portrayed by Steve Kazee. Nolan’s worries are palpable as he realizes that Jason remains at large, despite the police efforts to capture him in the premiere episode.
The episode opens with Nolan anticipating a successful operation against Jason, only to discover that their raid yields no results. “The stakes are remarkably high. Jason’s persistence is psychotic, and he has set his sights on the person Nolan loves the most,” Fillion explains in the first installment of Booked: The Rookie Aftershow. The tension is accentuated by Nolan’s desire to protect his loved ones—especially in light of Jason’s crafty nature.
As the plot unfolds, viewers learn that Bailey is currently deployed with the National Guard. Although her deployment was expected to conclude soon, unforeseen circumstances extended her stay overseas for safety reasons. Fillion emphasizes that Bailey is far from helpless; she is a capable individual who can fend for herself. “It frustrates John, but they both run towards danger in their professions—although one could argue that Bailey has more military experience,” he remarked.
Despite the pressures posed by Bailey’s situation, Fillion assures fans that their relationship remains strong. “They are still solid going forward, even though complications are on the horizon. This is a realistic depiction of how relationships evolve. However, I don’t see this creating a rift between them. Instead, it may serve to strengthen their bond,” he explains. This development will also be critical in their ongoing discussions about adoption.
The episode also brings a moment fans of Fillion have long awaited: Nolan chases after a suspect using a scooter. “I was surprised by how fast they are,” he admits, reflecting on the experience. “I usually don’t engage in any activities that require balance without wearing a helmet, and I certainly avoid anything that goes faster than my comfort level. But executing a stunt where I ran into someone while on that scooter was a thrilling challenge. It has been an idea I’ve pitched for quite some time.”
Fans can catch the full interview where Fillion delves deeper into the season premiere, including the dramatic ending and what lies ahead for Nolan, Bailey, and new recruit Celina, played by Lisseth Chavez.
