Navigating Mixed Emotions During Major Holidays: Supporting Your Veteran Community

The period from Thanksgiving through New Year’s is often marked by nostalgia, festive traditions, and social interactions. As holiday decorations adorn campuses and students rush to finalize their semester tasks, some individuals—both students and faculty—might experience feelings of isolation from the seasonal celebrations. This sentiment can be particularly intense for veteran students. A 2018 report by Forbes indicated that over 2.77 million service members have participated in more than five million deployments since 9/11. While American military involvement in hostile environments effectively ended with the Afghanistan withdrawal in 2021, many veterans continue to bear the psychological effects of their service.

The combination of end-of-term stresses, like exams and papers, and the holiday solitude many veteran students face can heighten their risk of suicidal thoughts, comparable to their non-military peers. Research suggests that veterans, especially those with combat experience, are at a heightened risk of suicide. Many veterans are used to being part of tightly-knit communities where shared military experiences forge close bonds. For some, their military identities are so intertwined with their sense of self that transitioning to civilian life can be a complex and difficult process.

Many veterans cherish memories of camaraderie forged during challenging and austere conditions, particularly during holidays and key celebrations like birthdays or significant achievements. Personally, one of my most memorable moments in service occurred while stationed in Korea. As a junior soldier, I proudly prepared a meal for my unit, with our first sergeant and commander generously funding the occasion to foster unity among us. Such experiences highlight the importance of recognizing the signs of distress in our veteran student populations.

What can be done to support these individuals effectively?

1. Identify Peer Mentors for Student Veterans

Universities can maintain a list of veteran volunteers willing to guide new veteran students. These mentors can bridge connections between students and the institution’s veterans assistance services. They also play a critical role in helping new students integrate into campus life, introducing them to peers and accompanying them to events, thus fostering community ties.

2. Green Zone Trainings for Faculty and Staff

Implementing Green Zone training can be an effective strategy to educate faculty and staff about military culture, customs, and traditions. This understanding can help university staff navigate the unique motivations and behaviors of veterans, thereby enhancing their engagement and sense of belonging within the academic community.

3. Create an Involved Veteran Community

Establishing a proactive veteran community on campus greatly benefits both the veterans and the institution. Veteran students provide invaluable perspectives forged from their service experiences, often enriching campus discussions and initiatives. Their life experiences cultivate critical thinking and a profound sense of purpose, making their insights extraordinarily beneficial for event planning and student organizations.

The holiday season offers a time for introspection regarding the past year, anticipation for future prospects, and appreciation of existing blessings. As we move from Thanksgiving into the celebrations of Christmas, Kwanzaa, and Hanukkah, it’s essential to take a moment from our busy lives to check on the well-being of those around us in our personal and professional networks. By prioritizing the welfare of our student communities, we contribute to a healthier environment where everyone can thrive.
