Navigating the Landscape: The Journey of Indie Publishers

The significant impact of independent publishers in a landscape increasingly dominated by large, multinational corporations was a focal point at the conference titled “From Latin America to the World: Publishing Today,” organized by Princeton University Press on April 7-8 in Princeton, N.J. The gathering brought together a diverse group of publishers from across the Americas to delve into the implications, obstacles, and distinctive benefits of maintaining independence in publishing.

Defining independence in publishing

Panel discussions offered a range of insights into what independence means in contemporary publishing. Tynan Kogane, senior editor at New Directions Publishing, emphasized that independence allows for editorial freedom. “We can opt to publish works that may not be commercially viable,” Kogane remarked.

Conversely, Michael Reynolds, executive publisher of Europa Editions, questioned traditional views of independence, proposing that “interdependence” may be a more relevant consideration. He stressed the importance of collaboration among various entities within the publishing ecosystem, noting, “In this moment, it’s clear how reliant we are on distributors, retailers, and readers.”

Cecilia Arbolave of Lote 42 from Brazil likened large publishing houses to massive ships, suggesting that independent publishers act as smaller, more agile vessels. “Independent publishers can navigate areas that big ships cannot reach,” she explained.

Gustavo “Maca” Wojciechowski, founder of Yaugurú in Uruguay, offered a more structured definition, proposing a typology of publishers: multinationals focused on profit, national publishers balancing commercial and cultural aims, and independents dedicated to “making visible the invisible.”

The day-to-day realities of independence

Reynolds highlighted the practical realities independent publishers face, arguing that the dominance of larger companies does not equate to proficiency. “It’s a misconception to think corporate publishers operate efficiently; they’re often clumsy, and many independents perform better due to our flexibility,” he stated.

The panelists noted several advantages for smaller enterprises, such as adaptability, distinct brand identities, and the freedom to take creative risks without the pressure of meeting quarterly earnings. Kogane pointed out that New Directions has achieved a clear reputation: “People familiar with our brand recognize what to expect from our books,” contrasting it with the ambiguity surrounding larger companies.

Arbolave suggested that financial constraints often drive independent publishers to produce higher-quality books. “Economic limitations can inspire creativity and lead to better outcomes,” she noted, asserting that these challenges push publishers to explore innovative alternatives.

When discussing the impact of independence on their daily operations, panelists described collaborative environments where team members often fulfill multiple roles and traditional hierarchies are less pronounced. “Everyone contributes to the conversation,” said Reynolds about Europa’s culture. “Expertise isn’t confined to departments; it informs the entire process.”

Arbolave highlighted Lote 42’s unique approach, treating each title as a distinct project deserving of special attention. “Every book asks something different from us,” she stated, emphasizing the careful consideration given to author relationships and production choices.

Wojciechowski underscored the importance of meticulously crafting each book, ensuring its uniqueness is reflected in its design and material composition. “Each publication must be treated as exceptional,” he affirmed.

Persistence and passion

The discussion also illuminated how independence allows publishers to nurture long-term relationships with authors who might otherwise be discarded by larger firms after initial lower sales. Reynolds mentioned Elena Ferrante, whose early works did not perform strongly, but due to Europa’s commitment, she eventually became a bestselling author.

Kogane shared a similar experience with Japanese author Yoko Tawada, whose initial sales were modest. New Directions persisted in publishing her works, leading to significant success a decade later, with print runs increasing to 25,000 copies.

The panel also featured Arbolave showcasing a complex pop-up poetry book that other publishers may have shied away from due to production difficulties. This example highlights the capacity of independent publishers to take creative risks. Lote 42’s commitment to independence is also reflected in their micro-bookstore, Banca Tatui, which emphasizes supporting independent works.

All panelists acknowledged the critical role of independent bookstores in their distribution channels, with Reynolds noting that they account for a substantial portion of Europa’s sales. “They are our primary partners in this industry,” he remarked.

For Wojciechowski, operating in a market where many provinces lack bookstores calls for innovative distribution strategies. His press has introduced a subscription model to ensure consistent access to literature for its subscribers.

The discussion concluded with a reaffirmation of the passion driving independent publishers, who prioritize literature over profit. “The financial challenges of indie publishing do not deter me,” Wojciechowski explained, recognizing that the path of independence entails inherent difficulties. “It’s simply part of the experience.”
