Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ Returns to Cinemas
Anurag Kashyap’s acclaimed film ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’, which features notable performances by Manoj Bajpayee and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, has solidified its reputation as a cult classic over the years. The film made a significant impact upon its original release, premiering in the Directors’ Fortnight section at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, and has once again captured the attention of audiences with its re-release on August 30.
In a recent discussion on a podcast with ANI, Nawazuddin Siddiqui shared his initial reactions to the film’s first cut, admitting that he was taken aback by it. He expressed that it was only after witnessing the film’s final version at Cannes that he came to truly appreciate its depth and significance. Siddiqui stated, “Not at all. You can never tell while you’re working on a film… When I watched the first cut, I thought, ‘Yeh kya bana diya hai yaar (What in the world has he made)’. But when I watched the final film at Cannes, after it had been refined, that’s when I realised why Anurag is Anurag.”
Siddiqui went on to commend Kashyap’s exemplary vision, calling him a “genius” who has dramatically reshaped the landscape of Indian cinema. He remarked, “He changed the face of Indian cinema, and the entire world took notice. He might not be appreciated in his own country, but I’m sorry, the world knows what he has done.”
The genesis of ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ as a cultural landmark is evident from the attention it garnered at international film festivals. In addition to its Cannes debut, Kashyap has continued to represent Indian cinema on global platforms, returning to the festival with ‘Raman Raghav 2.0’ in 2016 and ‘Kennedy’ in 2023.
This gripping gangster saga, which unfolds in the coal-mining town of Wasseypur in Jharkhand, was released in two parts in 2012. Alongside Siddiqui and Bajpayee, the film features an ensemble cast including Pankaj Tripathi, Richa Chadda, Huma Qureshi, and Tigmanshu Dhulia. It received accolades for its raw narrative style and rich visual aesthetics, establishing itself as both a critical and commercial triumph.
Looking ahead, Nawazuddin Siddiqui is gearing up for his forthcoming project, titled ‘Adbhut’, a mystery thriller that has already generated buzz online with the release of its intriguing poster and trailer. Recently, he posted a teaser on Instagram showcasing his character, dressed in a coat and holding a magnifying glass, a departure from his previous works and an indication of the film’s suspense-driven storyline.
