Polls Indicate Kamala Harris Holds Edge Over Donald Trump

Recent polling data reveals that U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris is leading her Republican opponent, Donald Trump, by a margin of 5 percentage points, according to an NBC News poll published on Sunday. This survey suggests a shift in public perception, as respondents have reportedly developed a more favorable view of Harris since she was announced as the Democratic presidential nominee.

The poll indicates that 48% of the 1,000 registered voters surveyed expressed a positive view of Harris, a notable increase from 32% recorded in July. This uptick is the most significant change in politician favorability ratings captured by NBC since President George W. Bush enjoyed a rise in his ratings following the September 11 attacks in 2001.

In contrast, the same poll found that 40% of respondents viewed Trump positively, which is a slight improvement from 38% in July. Conducted between September 13 and 17, the NBC News poll carries a margin of error of 3 percentage points.

A separate survey by CBS News corroborates these findings, showing Harris leading Trump by 4 percentage points (52% to 48%) among likely voters, within a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.

These results align with several recent national polls, including those conducted by Reuters/Ipsos, all indicating a competitive race as the November 5 election approaches.

While national polls provide crucial insights into voter sentiment, it is the results from the Electoral College, determined state by state, that will ultimately decide the election outcome. Several key battleground states are anticipated to play a pivotal role in this process.

Donald Trump, at 78 years old, is making his third attempt at securing the presidency after his 2020 loss to Joe Biden. Trump maintains claims of widespread voter fraud that he alleges contributed to his defeat, despite facing various federal and state criminal charges relating to his efforts to contest the election results.

Kamala Harris, 59, previously served as a U.S. senator and prosecutor before becoming the vice president under Joe Biden. Should she succeed in her campaign, Harris would mark a historic milestone as the first woman president in the United States’ 248-year history.

“She has shifted the narrative from being a referendum on Joe Biden to one focused on Donald Trump,” stated Amy Walter, publisher and editor in chief of the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

In CBS’s poll conducted from September 18 to 20, Harris’s favorability rose by 2 percentage points from an even split in August, influenced by her performance in a recent debate on September 10 and more favorable economic indicators.
