In a surprising turn of events, the possibility of a spring scrimmage featuring two Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams this April has encountered significant obstacles. The initiative, which involved a collaboration between Colorado and Syracuse football teams, proposed by Colorado’s head coach, Deion Sanders, aimed to enhance the competitiveness and excitement of the anticipated exhibition game.
Sanders articulated the rationale for joint practices, emphasizing the repetitive nature of internal scrimmages, which often fail to provide clear insights into player performance. “Competing against your own team can get monotonous,” he remarked in a recent press conference. Syracuse’s coach, Fran Brown, initially embraced Sanders’s proposal. However, for the faceoff to materialize, a waiver from the NCAA’s FBS oversight committee was required. Unfortunately, the committee recently voted against granting the necessary waiver, effectively halting progress towards the game. This decision aligns with a growing trend among college football programs that are reassessing the necessity and format of traditional spring games.
Concerns regarding player safety have prompted several coaches to cancel their spring games altogether. Issues such as the potential for injuries and the risk of losing players to transfers have been significant factors in these decisions. Additionally, the limited timeframe for scheduling joint scrimmages was another critical consideration for the NCAA, as many institutions had already outlined their spring practice schedules.

Interestingly, Nebraska recently announced a shift in focus for its spring activities, opting to replace the conventional intra-squad scrimmage with skill competitions and 7-on-7 games later in the month, demonstrating a broader reconsideration of spring football formats across the nation.
The NCAA’s oversight committee did indicate that the door isn’t completely shut on future scrimmages. According to a memo acquired by The Athletic, there will be discussions at upcoming meetings regarding concepts that could allow for joint practices in the future.
Support for the idea of spring scrimmages has been growing, with coaches like Mike Gundy from Oklahoma State showing interest in potential matchups with rival teams, such as Oklahoma. Similarly, Joey McGuire of Texas Tech expressed a desire for collaborations with nearby teams, reinforcing the notion that many coaches see the value in joint practices.
As the Colorado Buffaloes prepare for their scheduled spring game on April 19 in Boulder, the larger conversation around the format of spring practices in college football is likely to continue, as teams navigate the challenges of balancing competitiveness, player health, and academic integrity.
