Neeraj Ghaywan is set to return to the Cannes Film Festival with his latest project, Homebound, marking his second feature film. This emotional drama, featuring Ishaan Khatter, Janhvi Kapoor, and Vishal Jethwa, has been officially selected for the esteemed Un Certain Regard section at Cannes 2025, a notable milestone for Indian cinema on an international platform.
Karan Johar, the producer, announced this exciting news on Instagram, stating, “HOMEBOUND, our heartfelt story directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, has earned a spot at the prestigious Festival De Cannes! This moment encapsulates the essence of Indian cinema, highlighting our diverse narratives and talents on a global stage… it’s a victory for our film industry and an inspiration for budding filmmakers everywhere.”
Janhvi Kapoor, who plays a significant role in the film, expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “This is a moment where Indian cinema embraces the world. We are thrilled to share that #Homebound is officially part of the selection for the 78th Festival De Cannes in the ‘Un Certain Regard’ category. Our hearts are filled with gratitude, and we eagerly await to present this journey on cinema screens!”
One intriguing aspect that has drawn fan attention is that Homebound signifies the long-awaited reunion of Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter, reuniting them onscreen after their debut in Dhadak seven years ago. During the filming of Dhadak, the two were also rumored to be in a relationship.
Ghaywan, whose Cannes debut was marked by his acclaimed 2015 film Masaan—also featured in Un Certain Regard—brings a wealth of experience to this new project. Masaan, starring Vicky Kaushal and Richa Chadha, received international praise and garnered two prestigious awards, the Special Prize and the FIPRESCI Prize.
This year, the Un Certain Regard section also showcases other notable works, including Scarlett Johansson’s directorial debut Eleanor the Great, alongside entries from directors such as Morad Mostafa, Francesco Sossai, and Akinola Davies Jr.
In the meantime, Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light, which represented India in last year’s Main Competition, won the Grand Prix, further raising expectations for the impact Homebound might have at the festival.
The 2025 edition of the Cannes Film Festival is scheduled to take place from May 13 to May 24, with the esteemed Juliette Binoche serving as the jury president.
