Neil Callan Receives Suspension for Social Media Misconduct
Jockey Neil Callan has been handed an eight-month suspension following a series of infractions related to his conduct on social media. However, this suspension is suspended for a duration of two years, allowing him to continue his riding career during this period.
The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) charged Callan with three distinct violations of racing regulations. The initial charge, according to rule J19a, stemmed from a social media post made on December 15, 2023. This post was deemed abusive and disrespectful towards BHA steward Anthony McGlone.
Another charge was based on Callan’s conduct on December 9, 2023, where he made a social media statement that lacked appropriate respect for BHA officials and failed to demonstrate responsible use of the platform.
The third charge involved repeated incidents between August 16, 2023, and January 14, 2024. During this period, Callan engaged in offensive, abusive, and inappropriate postings, which were considered prejudicial to the integrity and reputation of horse racing in Great Britain.
In a closed plea agreement, Tim Grey, the chair of the independent judicial panel, stated, “The agreed sanction for Mr. Callan’s breaches is an eight-month suspension of his license, which will be suspended for a period of 24 months, running concurrently across the charges.” He emphasized that the suspension is intended as a deterrent.
Additionally, Callan is subject to an immediate financial penalty of £1,500. Grey also highlighted that should Callan breach any further racing regulations within the next two years, the suspended ban could be activated. This could apply to separate riding-related offences addressed by raceday stewards or the whip review committee, as well as judicial hearings concerning riding, running, or interference violations.
