Neil Nitin Mukesh Recalls Being Detained at New York Airport
Bollywood actor Neil Nitin Mukesh recently recounted a troubling experience during his time in the United States, where he faced questioning about his nationality at a New York airport. This incident not only raises questions about racial profiling but also emphasizes ongoing challenges relating to identity and recognition in international travel.
In an interview with Mashable India, Neil shared that despite possessing a valid Indian passport, immigration officials expressed skepticism regarding his nationality. The incident occurred during the filming of the movie New York, which thematically explores issues of racial profiling in the aftermath of 9/11, adding a layer of irony to the situation.
Describing the event, Neil stated, “I was detained at the airport. They refused to believe that I had an Indian passport and that I was Indian. They didn’t even let me answer or say anything for myself.” This moment of disbelief quickly evolved into an exhausting four-hour ordeal, during which Neil was repeatedly questioned without being afforded an opportunity to clarify his identity.
Neil recounted the resolution of this challenging interaction. “After four hours, they came and asked, ‘What do you have to say?’ and I simply said, ‘Just Google me.’” This straightforward response seemed to take the officers by surprise and shifted the dynamics of the conversation.
Following this, the officials’ demeanor changed dramatically, transitioning from skepticism to curiosity. “They started asking me about my grandfather, my father, and my family’s legacy,” Neil noted, shedding light on the complexities surrounding his family’s prominence in the Indian entertainment sector.
Neil, who hails from a renowned lineage in Indian music—being the grandson of famed playback singer Mukesh and the son of noted singer Nitin Mukesh—has chosen to carve his own path in acting. Currently, he stars in the satirical action comedy Hisaab Barabar, directed by Ashwni Dhir. The film, which also features R Madhavan, Kirti Kulhari, Rashami Desai, and Faisal Rashid, explores themes of systemic corruption through the lens of a railway ticket checker who uncovers discrepancies in minor bank transactions. The film is now available for streaming on ZEE5.
Despite his musical heritage, Neil made a distinct choice to follow an acting career. He made his debut as a child actor in Vijay (1988) and later gained recognition in lead roles through films like Johnny Gaddaar (2007), a neo-noir thriller that received critical praise. His diverse filmography includes prominent works such as New York (2009), Lafangey Parindey (2010), David (2013), and Saaho (2019). The challenges he faced at the New York airport serve as a reminder of the broader social issues surrounding identity and recognition in today’s world.
