Josie Huckle Eyes Netball Super League Glory with Manchester Thunder
Vice-captain of Manchester Thunder, Josie Huckle, recently expressed her ambition to “cause some chaos” as she sets her sights on achieving Netball Super League gold this season. The seasoned goal keeper, now in her third year with Thunder after the dissolution of Wasps, is eager to add a Super League title to her existing accolades, with both she and the club having won four titles in the past.
In her inaugural season with the Thunder in 2023, Huckle contributed to a third-place finish in the league, but the team fell short in the semi-finals against Loughborough Lightning, ending the match 65-59. The following year, Thunder faced Lightning again, this time in the final, where they were defeated once more.
“I believe that in my first year I got a bronze medal, then last year I went for silver. Now, in my third year, I’m aiming for the gold,” Huckle remarked, highlighting her determination and ambition.
She praised her coaching team, which includes director of netball and head coach Karen Greig, as well as assistant coaches Gabrielle Towell and Laura Malcolm, for their invaluable support. “Having such experienced coaches means we’re set up for success, and they’ve given me the freedom to explore different strategic approaches,” Huckle added.
Huckle acknowledged the evolving nature of the game, noting, “Winning one-on-one battles has become increasingly difficult due to the presence of strong shooters. Instead, I’ve been focusing on maintaining distance and creating opportunities to disrupt offensive plays, and my reach allows me to introduce some unpredictability into the game.”
At 33 years old, Huckle is far from ready to retire from competitive play. She noted the significant improvements in the Netball Super League, particularly due to the influx of international talent that has enhanced the game’s quality. “The competition has escalated tremendously, especially with incredible players joining us from overseas,” she stated. “The matches have become more intense, and I’m still enjoying every minute of it.”
As Thunder currently sits in a solid second position in the league standings, they are gearing up for a crucial match against league leaders London Pulse this Friday.
Huckle mentioned the squad’s eagerness to secure a victory. “We’re all very much looking forward to facing this big challenge. We recognize the talent of London Pulse, especially after their Super Cup win, but we believe that any game can go either way. We aim to give them a run for their money,” she said, emphasizing the team’s focus on delivering high-quality netball.
