Johnny Depp’s “Black Mass” Now Streaming on Netflix
Fans of Johnny Depp can now celebrate as Netflix has added the actor’s provocative film, Black Mass, to its library, making it a worthy consideration for viewing.
As Netflix continues to release new original titles like The Deliverance and Rebel Ridge, it has also revisited its catalogue, introducing several older films throughout September.
Among these reintroductions is Black Mass, a biographical crime drama featuring Johnny Depp alongside David Harbour and Benedict Cumberbatch. The film explores the tumultuous final chapters of mobster Whitey Bulger’s criminal empire.
Despite receiving a blend of reviews from both critics and audiences, Black Mass boasts a respectable 73% certified fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.
This film diverges from conventional biographical storytelling by centering on Bulger’s adult life as a notorious gangster, rather than focusing on his youth or formative experiences.
Bulger led the Winter Hill Gang, an Irish Mob faction that wielded considerable power in Somerville, Massachusetts.
The narrative follows Bulger’s alliance with the FBI as he attempts to undermine the Angiulo Brothers, rivals within the New England Mafia and the Winter Hill Gang.
The film delves into themes of political corruption, violent gang rivalries, and the often harsh realities faced by lifelong criminals, which has resulted in divided opinions among viewers.
One critic noted the film’s shortcomings, stating, “It’s frustratingly half-assed… With a subject like that, someone is going to eventually get it right.”
