Netflix has been utilizing artificial intelligence to recommend movies and television shows for some time. Now, it is rolling out an upgraded feature that can tailor suggestions to your mood or any specific criteria you set.
As noted by Bloomberg and corroborated by Netflix in communications with The Verge, this new feature is currently available to iPhone users in Australia and New Zealand. Although the initial rollout focuses on iOS, U.S. subscribers can expect it to be available in the near future.
This feature will be optional for users during its initial phase, and it is powered by technology from OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. Neither company has made a formal announcement regarding this new development.
Netflix’s cautious approach to launching this recommendation feature may stem from the growing scrutiny surrounding AI in the entertainment sector, particularly concerning its implications for creativity and content creation.

While specific testing details remain sparse, one of the main features highlighted so far is the ability to request recommendations based on your mood. We have not yet had the opportunity to try this feature at TechRadar, but it is reasonable to predict how it might operate based on existing models.
Similar to current generative AI systems, such as ChatGPT, you may be able to input detailed queries to receive personalized movie or show recommendations. For instance, you could ask for films akin to classic ’90s action flicks that are under two hours long and have minimal violence. This personalized touch is expected in Netflix’s future functionality.
In essence, you will be able to specify various parameters for your recommendations, ranging from genres to specific settings, and receive a curated list of AI-generated movie and show selections—exclusively from the Netflix library.
