Steven Bergwijn Voices Discontent with Koeman Following Criticism

Steven Bergwijn has publicly stated his unwillingness to play under Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman, following critical remarks about his recent transfer to the Saudi Pro League. The 26-year-old forward made a notable move from Ajax to Al-Ittihad, reportedly worth £17.7 million, which has led to Koeman expressing doubts regarding Bergwijn’s sporting ambitions.

Koeman was explicit in stating that he would no longer select Bergwijn for the national team, implying that the player’s decision to leave European football was motivated primarily by financial gains rather than a desire to compete at a high level. He remarked, “the book is basically closed to him,” suggesting a finality to Bergwijn’s international prospects under his management.

In contrast, Bergwijn has stated that he had not discussed the transfer with Koeman directly. He expressed his disappointment in an interview with Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, saying, “I don’t even want to play under Koeman anymore.” He criticized Koeman for his public comments and for not reaching out to hear Bergwijn’s perspective prior to making such statements.

Bergwijn articulated his frustration, claiming, “I won’t play for someone who portrays me like he has done in the media.” He felt that a committed coach would have sought a conversation before making judgments, adding that he learned of Koeman’s views through television rather than a direct communication.

Responding to Bergwijn’s outburst, Koeman commented that it was understandable for the player to react, yet he maintained that he would not pursue the matter any further. He emphasized his belief that Bergwijn’s transfer decision reflected a lack of sporting ambition, reiterating that his comments were intended to be straightforward and not overly critical.

Koeman and Bergwijn share a history, as Koeman gave the former Tottenham forward his international debut in 2018. Over the course of 35 appearances for the national team, Bergwijn has scored eight goals, showcasing his capabilities on the international stage.

After a brief period managing FC Barcelona, Koeman resumed his role with the Netherlands last year. During his tenure, he has not shied away from critiquing players, including Ajax striker Brian Brobbey, whose technical abilities Koeman has previously questioned, drawing further scrutiny from Bergwijn.

Bergwijn concluded his remarks by indicating that Koeman’s public critiques could lead to a credibility crisis for the coach, stating, “If he continues like this, he will lose all his credibility.” The ongoing tension between the player and coach highlights a growing divide within the Dutch national team’s setup and raises questions about the future of their relationship.
