New BC Green MLAs Take Oath Before Conservatives and NDP

Following the recent provincial election, British Columbia welcomes two newly elected members of the Green Party into its legislature. The swearing-in ceremonies for Rob Botterell, who represents Saanich North and the Islands, and Jeremy Valeriote from West Vancouver-Sea to Sky, mark a significant moment for the party, which could influence the dynamics in a legislature where the NDP maintains a precarious one-seat majority.

Both Botterell and Valeriote were elected on October 19, navigating a closely contested electoral landscape. Their participation comes at a time when the NDP, led by Premier David Eby, holds 47 of the 93 seats, confirmed through recent judicial recounts in two ridings.

Upcoming Legislative Developments

John Rustad’s BC Conservatives, who secured 44 seats, are set to be sworn in during a ceremony scheduled for Tuesday evening. Eby and his New Democrat MLAs will follow suit with their swearing-in scheduled for Wednesday. In the coming week, Eby is also expected to announce his new cabinet and summon the legislature for a brief fall session, primarily to elect a Speaker.

In discussions with the NDP regarding potential collaboration, Botterell expressed optimism about the Greens’ role moving forward. “We’re in discussions with the NDP and right now we’re putting together our plan for the next four years,” he stated after the ceremony, while keeping the specifics of these discussions under wraps for the moment.

Despite losing her re-election bid in Victoria, BC Green Party Leader Sonia Furstenau will continue to lead, with support from notable figures like federal Green Leader Elizabeth May, who attended the ceremony. May expressed her enthusiasm for the election of Valeriote, noting it as a crucial step for the party in establishing a presence beyond Vancouver Island. “It’s a very encouraging day. It means a lot,” said May, highlighting the significance of having representation from different regions.

As the Green Party carves out its position within the legislature, the ensuing collaboration or contention with the NDP will be closely watched, marking a new chapter in British Columbia’s political landscape.
