New Online Bookstore Aims to Alleviate Burnout Among Professionals and Retirees

A fresh addition to the world of online retail, 5 to 9 Books, has emerged with a mission to support individuals grappling with burnout and those recently entering retirement. This virtual bookstore features a diverse selection of categories including burnout recovery, self-care practices, culinary delights, craft projects, and activities for families.

The initiative is the brainchild of Olivia McCoy, a Philadelphia-based entrepreneur. McCoy expressed her vision behind the bookstore, stating it was created to inspire other professionals facing burnout and new retirees to rediscover passion, purpose, and a sense of community beyond their earlier careers. With a professional background encompassing various roles in the publishing sector, including marketing stints at Greenleaf Book Group and Smith Publicity, McCoy is well-versed in the literary landscape. She also played a significant role in organizing the Romantasy Festival in Chicago this year.

McCoy’s journey into the bookselling realm was ignited by a part-time position at Bookends & Beginnings in Evanston, Illinois. Reflecting on her experience, McCoy remarked, “I worked briefly as a bookseller in Chicago while I got my Master’s degree in Leadership for Creative Enterprises during COVID and fell in love with curation and personal book recommendations.” This period helped cultivate her enthusiasm for bookselling and led her to establish her own platform.

Looking toward the future, McCoy has plans to collaborate with authors to conduct workshops aimed at encouraging readers to deeply explore various subjects. This initiative aims to foster connection and learning among readers seeking to enrich their knowledge.

In a personal account, McCoy shared an impactful moment from her life: “When my therapist recommended I ‘touch grass’ more and seek out overstimulation less, I began reading more nonfiction and seeking out a hobby. When you care about what you do, it’s easy to get wrapped up in and devoured by it every hour of the day. Reading about new projects and activities helped me to explore some options without investing the time, energy, and money, and I discovered a number of new things about myself.” This assertion underscores the bookstore’s philosophy of encouraging self-exploration and balance amidst hectic lifestyles.
