“Sunrise on the Reaping” Breaks Records in First Week of Sales
The highly anticipated addition to the iconic Hunger Games series, Sunrise on the Reaping, has made a remarkable impact by selling over 1.5 million English copies within its first week across various nations, including the US, UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. This latest installment has rapidly ascended the bestseller charts, topping USA Today, New York Times, Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, as well as independent bookstore lists in both the US and UK. Notably, the book has recorded a staggering 1.2 million sales solely in the US.
In exceeding the sales figures of its predecessor, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, along with Mockingjay, the third book published in 2010, this release signifies a renewed fervor for the series, which remains a significant player in the young adult genre.
“Sunrise on the Reaping” delves into the formative experiences of Haymitch Abernathy, a fan-favorite character, as he grapples with his bleak fate when selected for the Hunger Games. Author Suzanne Collins comments on the novel’s thematic depths, stating, “With Sunrise on the Reaping, I was inspired by David Hume’s idea of implicit submission and, in his words, ‘the easiness with which the many are governed by the few.’ The narrative invites further exploration into propaganda and the influence of those in control of the message. The question ‘Real or not real?’ appears increasingly pertinent in today’s context.”
In addition to its literary success, there is already buzz around a film adaptation of the novel, set to premiere on November 20, 2026, under the direction of Lionsgate.
