Armed Robbery at M&T Bank in Sweden Leads to One Arrest
An armed robbery occurred on Monday at M&T Bank in Sweden, New York, drawing a swift response from law enforcement and the community. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office described the incident as chaotic, resembling a scene from a film.
The event transpired just after 4 p.m. at the bank located at 6560 Fourth Section Road. According to deputies, the suspect entered the establishment wielding a firearm, herding nearly all patrons into a restroom before directing two bank employees to the vault.
Sheriff Todd Baxter reported that the robber made away with a staggering $452,000 in cash.
Following the robbery, the suspect fled in a blue Honda Civic. However, the vehicle broke down shortly after on Lake Road, close to where Routes 18 and 19 intersect in Hamlin.
Approximately 40 minutes post-robbery, a vigilant citizen contacted 911 upon noticing a man attempting to remove the license plates from the abandoned Civic and clean its interior. A black SUV was also reported in the vicinity.
Law enforcement quickly identified two men associated with the SUV in the Tops Plaza area of Hamlin. Deputies recovered the stolen cash and additional evidence linking the suspects to the robbery.
Sheriff Baxter commended the deputies and the proactive citizen for their roles in the case. “This was a well-planned operation, except for the blue car,” remarked Investigator Sgt. David Bolton during a press briefing. He noted that the individuals involved did not have extensive criminal backgrounds, and this robbery did not appear to be part of any organized effort.
John Savage, a 49-year-old man from Rochester, has been charged with first-degree robbery and second-degree grand larceny, both of which are felonies. The second individual was released as the investigation continued.
The investigation is ongoing, with deputies reviewing hundreds of hours of surveillance footage to gather more details. Additional charges are anticipated.
