Survivor of New Orleans Attack Recovers in Central Florida
SANFORD, Fla. – A man with ties to Central Florida is recovering after an ordeal in New Orleans where a deadly vehicle attack occurred.
On New Year’s Day, a tragic incident resulted in the loss of at least 14 lives and left 35 others injured when a man drove a truck into a gathering in New Orleans, as reported by the FBI.
Jeremi Sensky, a winter resident of Sanford who usually lives in Pittsburgh, survived the attack but not without significant trauma. His daughter reported that he underwent a lengthy, 10-hour surgery following the collision. She expressed a belief that his wheelchair may have mitigated the impact, possibly saving his life.
“We strongly believe that when the driver struck the wheelchair, it caused him to lose control and subsequently hit a crate. For whatever reason, my dad missed the gunfire, and he made it out alive,” stated Heaven Sensky-Kirsch, Jeremi’s daughter. “We take comfort in the idea that his injury might have spared others from harm,” she added.
According to family members, Sensky is a quadriplegic due to a car accident in the 1990s that left him paralyzed from the neck down. During the chaos that unfolded on New Year’s Day, a police officer assisted in carrying him to safety.
“We’re immensely grateful for the police officer named Patrick who stayed with my father after the incident,” Sensky-Kirsch said. “The heroic actions of the first responders, paramedics, and hospital staff are what kept him alive.”
Currently, Sensky remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Despite the challenges he faces due to his existing health conditions, he is reportedly maintaining a positive outlook. His daughter mentioned that he is eager to recover sufficiently to attend Sanford Porchfest, his favorite event, scheduled for late February.
“I’m not surprised by his resilience because I know my dad’s character,” Sensky-Kirsch shared. “He has an incredible attitude, and I hope that those who hear our story can find inspiration in it. If you’re fortunate enough to still be alive, we just wish that you continue to persevere.”
To assist with medical costs, the family has established a GoFundMe page to help cover his recovery expenses.
