Yoon Sung-hyun Praises Jisoo’s Dedication to Newtopia

Last Updated: February 04, 2025, 13:42 IST

Yoon Sung-hyun admitted that working with Jisoo in Newtopia was a cakewalk. The director heaped praise on the BLACKPINK member’s hard work and commitment to the project.

Newtopia is scheduled to premiere on Prime Video on February 7.

Jisoo, a prominent member of the globally recognized South Korean group BLACKPINK, is taking on a significant role in the upcoming series Newtopia. Although Jisoo previously showcased her talent in the K-drama Snowdrop, director Yoon Sung-hyun admitted he had initial concerns regarding her acting. His worries stemmed from the fact that Jisoo had not participated in any acting projects since the 2021 drama, leading him to wonder about her readiness for this new endeavor. However, those concerns quickly dissipated upon observing her rigorous preparation and commitment.

During a press conference on February 3, Yoon detailed his experience working with Jisoo. He expressed relief when he found the collaboration to be surprisingly effortless. “Since she hadn’t acted since Snowdrop, I initially wondered, ‘Will she be okay?’ Unlike actors who work continuously, she took a break,” he stated. His comments reflect a recognition of the unique challenges faced by artists transitioning between different phases of their careers.

Yoon praised Jisoo’s dedication, noting that she committed four days a week to script readings and preparation. He remarked that by the time filming began, she was “fully prepared,” demonstrating her determination to succeed in this role.

As Yoon continued to discuss Jisoo’s performance, he expressed his gratitude for working alongside her, saying, “I feel lucky to have collaborated with her.” He pointed out that while audiences might not immediately grasp the full depth of her character in the early episodes, it becomes evident that Jisoo was the perfect choice for the role as the series progresses.

The director elaborated on the character’s nuance, highlighting that Jisoo’s natural sense of humor significantly contributed to her portrayal. “The character has an underlying sense of humour, and Jisoo herself is incredibly humorous. That is why I wanted to work with her. I consider it a huge relief. She helped me in many ways, both as a person and as an actress,” Yoon noted.

In closing, Yoon underscored Jisoo’s ability to handle demanding action sequences with an uplifting spirit, despite the physical challenges they presented. “I am truly grateful for that,” he remarked, reflecting his admiration for her work ethic.

Newtopia tells the story of soldier Lee Jae-yoon, played by Park Jung-min, and his long-distance relationship with Kang Yeong-ju, portrayed by Jisoo, as they navigate survival in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by zombies. The series draws inspiration from the novel Influenza and marks Yoon Sung-hyun’s inaugural venture into the streaming space.

Mark your calendars: Newtopia will be available for streaming on Prime Video starting February 7.
