Chicago Fire Pursue Neymar for an MLS Transfer
Chicago Fire are reportedly engaged in negotiations to potentially acquire Brazilian striker Neymar, marking a significant interest in bringing the football star to Major League Soccer (MLS).
The 32-year-old forward is set to become a free agent after the conclusion of his contract with Al-Hilal this summer, having spent two years in the Saudi Pro League. There are indications that Chicago Fire can manage the financial aspects of the transfer, although discussions are ongoing between the MLS club, the Saudi Pro League, and Neymar’s representatives. Sources have indicated to BBC Sport that while talks are active, the transfer remains far from finalized and is intricate in nature.
With Neymar not being registered for the latter half of the Saudi season, the onus is now on the player to decide his next move. The MLS transfer window will be open from January 31 until April 23, allowing a timeframe for possible transitions.
Chicago Fire had already placed Neymar on their Discovery List, which is a strategic move allowing MLS clubs to protect their interest in specific players. This means no other team in the league can engage with Neymar unless Chicago grants their approval.
Since joining Al-Hilal from Paris St-Germain in 2023 for a league-record £77 million, Neymar has appeared only seven times, netting one goal. His time in Saudi Arabia has been marred by injury, particularly a cruciate knee ligament tear sustained in October 2023 that sidelined him for a full year.
Adding another layer to the scenario, Neymar’s former FC Barcelona teammates, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, are currently playing in MLS with Inter Miami, who clinched the Eastern Conference title last season. In contrast, Chicago Fire are currently positioned at the bottom of the standings, seeking a turnaround in their fortunes.
On the other hand, Al-Hilal remains at the pinnacle of the Pro League, closely edged by Al-Ittihad on goal difference after a stunning 9-0 victory over Al-Fateh in their recent match. Notable players like Aleksandar Mitrovic, Ruben Neves, and Joao Cancelo are part of the Al-Hilal squad, contributing to their dominant performance.
