Neymar Makes Return to Brazil National Team for World Cup Qualifiers
Neymar has made his way back into the Brazil national squad after being sidelined for 17 months, as the team gears up for World Cup qualifiers against Colombia and Argentina.
The forward, who plays for Santos, last donned the Selecao jersey during a match against Uruguay in October 2023, where he suffered a knee injury that kept him out of action.
After a less-than-stellar period at Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League, Neymar’s return to Santos in January has revitalized his career. Since his comeback, he has showcased impressive form, contributing three goals and three assists in just seven matches within the Brazilian league.
Neymar, now 33 years old, stands second in all-time caps for Brazil with 128 appearances, trailing only behind the legendary Cafu, who holds 142 caps. Additionally, Neymar is Brazil’s all-time leading scorer, with 79 goals, surpassing the iconic Pele by two goals.
Brazil, currently positioned fifth in the Conmebol World Cup qualifying standings with 18 points from 12 matches, will host Colombia on March 21 before heading to Argentina to face the group leaders five days later.
The squad selected by coach Dorival Jr. features a robust group of 10 players from the Premier League, including renowned goalkeepers Alisson from Liverpool and Ederson from Manchester City. Defenders Gabriel and Murillo, representing Arsenal and Nottingham Forest respectively, have also been called up. The Wolves duo of Andre and Matheus Cunha, along with Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton, add to the strong defensive lineup.
In terms of offensive capabilities, Brighton’s Joao Pedro and Savinho from Manchester City are among the forward options available for the coach as Brazil looks to secure crucial points in the upcoming matches.
