Emmitt Smith Voices Frustration Over Cowboys’ Super Bowl Drought
Pro Football Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith has expressed his growing frustration regarding the Dallas Cowboys’ ongoing struggle to return to Super Bowl glory. As the Philadelphia Eagles celebrate their recent successes, including two Super Bowl victories in the last seven years, Smith finds the situation increasingly difficult to bear.
“I’m sick of it,” Smith stated during an interview with Sports Radio 94WIP. He lamented how over the past two decades, rival fans have taken the opportunity to mock the Cowboys’ historic achievements. “Everywhere I go, I hear ‘Go Birds.’” He added, “I’m always asking, ‘Where are you going?’ You still got a long way to go to get to us.”Â

Smith’s comments are rooted in the Cowboys’ past success, boasting five Super Bowl titles, with three of those championships earned in the early to mid-1990s during Smith’s tenure with the team. Despite this historical edge, the Eagles have recently caught up, winning their first Super Bowl in 2018 and another in February of this year.
The current outlook for the Eagles appears promising, as they continue to develop a strong offensive lineup that includes stars like Saquon Barkley, Jalen Hurts, and A.J. Brown. Smith, however, cannot shake the feeling that the Cowboys should be more competitive, especially given the club’s tradition of excellence.
“That part bugs me,” he commented about the Eagles fans’ taunts regarding the Cowboy’s lengthy absence from the NFC championship game. He believes the Dallas organization should aim to compete for the coveted title at least once or twice every decade. “For us not to be there over the last 30 years is a crying shame,” he remarked.
The Cowboys seemed poised for playoff success with three consecutive 12-5 seasons from 2021 to 2023. Unfortunately, they faced disappointments in the postseason, including two wild-card game exits and a divisional round defeat to the San Francisco 49ers in 2022. The last time Dallas advanced past the divisional round was in 1996, the year they last claimed the Super Bowl title.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has stated his commitment to improving the team, facing scrutiny after the firing of head coach Mike McCarthy and the hiring of Brian Schottenheimer. McCarthy had been at the helm since the 2020 season, but a disappointing 7-10 finish this past year, compounded by key player injuries, led to the decision for a change.
As of now, the Cowboys have not aggressively pursued free agent signings, and attention will soon shift to the 2025 NFL Draft, where they hold the 12th overall pick. Fans and analysts alike will be keen to see how the team addresses its needs in the upcoming selections, considering the weight of recent years’ disappointments.
