As the 2025 NFL season approaches, Patrick Mahomes welcomes a new backup quarterback into the Kansas City Chiefs’ ranks.
Gardner Minshew, who started nine games with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2024, has reportedly inked a one-year contract with the Chiefs, per ESPN.
Last offseason, Minshew signed a two-year deal worth $25 million, aiming to secure the starting position with the Raiders. Initially, he began the season as the starter, but after a 2-3 start, head coach Antonio Pierce decided to swap him out for backup Aidan O’Connell in Week 6 during a match against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
After a difficult period, Minshew reclaimed the starting role by Week 8, yet injuries soon plagued his season. In Week 12, a collarbone injury forced Minshew to the sidelines for the remainder of the season, thrusting O’Connell into the lead role.

Ultimately, Minshew’s season ended with a record of 2-8 over the ten games he participated in, where he accumulated 2,013 passing yards along with nine touchdowns and ten interceptions. This performance, however, contrasts sharply with his more successful previous seasons, notably his Pro Bowl campaign with the Indianapolis Colts in 2023. During that time, he recorded a 7-6 record across 13 starts, generating a personal best of 3,305 passing yards along with 15 touchdowns against nine interceptions.
In total, Minshew has played in the league for six seasons after entering as a sixth-round draft pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2019. Over 46 starts, he has achieved a 17-29 record, accumulating 11,950 passing yards, 68 touchdowns, and 34 interceptions.
Last season, the Chiefs had Carson Wentz, a former franchise quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, as Mahomes’ backup, while the previous year featured Chad Henne in that role.
The Chiefs are optimistic that Minshew will not need to assume the starting job, indicating that would mean Mahomes is facing an injury.
