The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated an investigation into the remote parking functionalities present in certain Tesla models. This inquiry specifically focuses on features known as Smart Summon and Actual Smart Summon, which utilize onboard cameras to facilitate autonomous parking maneuvers.
Within this investigation, the Office of Defects Investigation has documented a total of 12 complaints regarding incidents involving the Smart Summon feature. Additionally, there has been one reported case concerning the Actual Smart Summon feature, which is claimed to have resulted in a crash. The NHTSA has also examined three media reports that detail comparable collision incidents involving Actual Smart Summon, noting that in these cases, the drivers were unable to respond in time to prevent the accidents.
These remote parking capabilities are integrated into approximately 2.6 million vehicles, spanning various models, including the 2016 to 2025 Model S, the 2016 Model X, and the 2018 to 2025 Model 3 and Model Y series.
In conjunction with this investigation, Tesla recently experienced a notable downturn in vehicle deliveries for the first time. The company announced that it delivered around 1.78 million vehicles in 2024, a decrease from the 1.81 million units delivered in 2023.
