In the latest installment of Variety’s Actor on Actors series, Broadway icons Jonathan Groff and Nicole Scherzinger engage in a compelling conversation. The pair delve into Scherzinger’s extensive portrayal of Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard, the significance of receiving approval from Broadway legend Patti LuPone, and Groff’s journey of bringing Bobby Darin’s story to life in Just in Time.
“I was relieved I didn’t know she was in the audience,” Scherzinger remarked, reflecting on LuPone’s attendance at one of her performances. “The following day, I caught her interview on Frank DiLella’s podcast, and I was shocked to learn she saw the show. I couldn’t believe she approved; her kindness is something I treasure. I even have a photo of her and Glenn Close in my dressing room for inspiration.”
Turning to Just in Time, Groff shared his deep connection to the project that stemmed from a passionate discussion about Bobby Darin’s music with the singer’s son. “Dinner lasted four hours, and I felt drawn to this thing I needed to pursue. You can’t replicate that instinct. After our first preview, I found myself in tears,” he disclosed.
Scherzinger also opened up about her commitment to performing, recounting how she rarely misses a show, having only ever called out once on the West End and just recently on Broadway. “I pride myself on my resilience. I’ve performed through illness, yet it was incredibly difficult for me to finally call out last week,” she admitted.
The acclaimed production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard, featuring Scherzinger, is set to run through July 13 at the St. James Theatre. Meanwhile, Groff stars as Bobby Darin in the new musical Just in Time, which will officially debut on Saturday, April 26, at the Circle in the Square Theatre.
This annual Actors on Actors series, which coincides with the awards season, pairs notable stars from film and Broadway for in-depth discussions about their projects, career journeys, and current industry themes.
The finale of the 2025 Broadway edition will highlight Cole Escola (Oh, Mary) and Darren Criss (Maybe Happy Ending) and is scheduled to be released on April 26.
Dead Outlaw
Longacre Theatre (Broadway)
Dead Outlaw is a darkly comedic and uniquely crafted musical based on the astonishing true story of Elmer McCurdy, an outlaw who transitioned from life to death to celebrity. The narrative follows the surreal adventures of his remains posthumously, exploring themes of fame, failure, and the true essence — or emptiness — of legacy. The tale reminds us that even in death, life’s fullest experiences are still achievable.
