Nintendo has announced a price increase for certain accessories of the Switch 2, while maintaining the console’s retail price at $450. This decision comes amid concerns from gamers that tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on imports from China and Vietnam could lead to higher costs, further compounding the perception that the console’s price is already elevated.

Key Facts

Nintendo confirmed that pre-orders for the Switch 2 will commence on April 24, following a delay to evaluate the potential effects of tariffs and shifting market conditions.

While the Switch 2 itself will remain priced at $450, a number of accessories have seen price increases: Joy-Con controllers will rise from $89.99 to $94.99, Pro controllers will go from $79.99 to $84.99, and the Switch 2 camera will increase from $49.99 to $54.99.

The company cited “changes in market conditions” as the rationale behind the price hikes and indicated that further adjustments might be necessary based on economic factors in the future.

The official launch date for the Nintendo Switch 2 and its accessories is set for June 5.

Forbes has reached out to Nintendo for additional commentary.

What’s The Reason For The Nintendo Switch Accessory Price Hike?

This price adjustment occurs in the wake of Trump’s extensive tariff measures affecting multiple countries, particularly those where Nintendo’s manufacturing operations are concentrated, such as China and Vietnam. Notably, China has become a focal point in Trump’s tariff policies, experiencing a cumulative rate increase to 145%, while Vietnam faces a 46% tariff rate, although it has managed to evade tariffs during a temporary reprieve.

Prior to the recent price hikes, industry expert Joost van Dreunen suggested that consumers should expect accessory price increases of 10% to 15% as a result of the ongoing tariff situation. He highlighted that Nintendo, which had previously shifted a significant portion of its production to Vietnam to mitigate risks associated with a trade conflict with China, now finds itself facing elevated tariffs in both regions.

Why Have Consumers Criticized The Nintendo Switch 2 Prices?

Nintendo’s introduction of the Switch 2 at a price of $450 was met with disappointment among fans, especially since this represents a 50% increase over the launch price of the original Switch, which was $300 in 2017. Industry analyst Serkan Toto noted that the high price might be a strategic move by Nintendo to guard against potential supply chain disruptions due to tariffs.

Additionally, gamers have voiced their concerns regarding the pricing of certain launch titles, with games like “Mario Kart World” being listed at $80—exceeding the prevalent $70 price point that most new games traditionally occupy.
