Nintendo has taken official action against Hololive, a popular VTuber agency, following a live stream by one of its stars, Pekora, where she played a modified version of Pokémon Emerald.

Pekora has gained immense popularity, boasting 2.7 million subscribers on YouTube and consistently ranking among the top creators on the platform.

On March 30, Pekora expressed her intention to stream Pokémon Emerald, specifically aiming to capture a Shiny Mew, a feat that presents considerable challenges to players. Reports from Automaton highlighted the difficulties of accomplishing this task.

Pekora reportedly searched for multiple used Pokémon Emerald cartridges through auction sites, hoping to find one that included “the old sea map,” a rare item that was only available at a Pokémon convention in Japan back in 2005 and is crucial for encountering Mew.

However, some players have circumvented these limitations by using hacked cartridges, and during the livestream, it appeared that Pekora had done just that. This usage did not sit well with Nintendo.

Nintendo takes action against Pekora’s Pokémon stream

On April 9, Hololive released a statement confirming they had received a communication from Nintendo, prompting the delisting of Pekora’s stream.

Beyond requesting the removal of the broadcast, Nintendo advised the agency to ensure that its projects adhere to established guidelines and avoid potential violations.

Nintendo also urged Hololive to educate its streamers about the importance of adhering to content guidelines.

In response, Hololive quickly issued an apology and committed to implementing measures aimed at ensuring compliance with Nintendo’s policies in the future.

They stated, “In addition to the privatization of the video, we will strive to enhance our planning and implementation processes, along with educating and guiding our affiliated talent.” They also expressed regret for any disruption this incident may have caused to their fans and stakeholders.

Pekora’s situation highlights a growing trend, as other Japanese creators have recently faced repercussions for not adhering to Nintendo’s regulations.

Earlier in March, a well-known competitive player, ‘Hurt’, was banned from participating in tournaments due to the use of mods on his Nintendo Switch to enhance online gameplay.
