Nintendo has officially revealed its upcoming gaming console, the Nintendo Switch 2, boasting substantial hardware enhancements and improved performance.
During a recent Nintendo Direct presentation, the company announced that the new device is set to launch on June 5. One of the most striking features of the Switch 2 is its capability to support up to 4K resolution at 120 frames per second, complemented by high-dynamic range (HDR) technology for enhanced visual fidelity.
The highly anticipated title, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, will be made available for both the original Switch and the Switch 2, allowing players to enjoy the game in stunning 4K at 60 FPS with HDR or at 1080p resolution with a smooth 120 FPS, also featuring HDR.
The Switch 2 introduces innovative Jon-Con 2 controllers that securely attach to the console’s body using strong magnetic connections. These controllers come equipped with a detachment button on the reverse side and feature enlarged SL and SR buttons, along with larger analog sticks for improved control.
In an interesting twist, these controllers can also function as a mouse, and the console includes a built-in microphone and an optional camera to facilitate voice chat among players.
The console boasts a substantial upgrade in storage capacity, offering 256 gigabytes of in-system storage— a significant increase from the original Switch’s 32GB. Additionally, enhanced fan ventilation will help maintain optimal cooling for the system during gameplay. The Switch 2 is designed to support a wide array of games, both physical and digital, ensuring compatibility with many titles from its predecessor.
Nintendo emphasized that the Switch 2 is not merely an incremental upgrade but a comprehensive redesign of the original system. To familiarize users with the new features, a mini-game called Welcome Tour will be included, providing a guided tour of the console’s capabilities.
A diverse lineup of games is set to debut with the Switch 2, featuring both established franchises and new releases. Anticipated titles include IO Interactive’s latest James Bond installment, Hitman: The World of Assassination, Hogwarts Legacy, EA’s Madden series, Split Fiction, Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut, Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition, Mario Kart World, as well as Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. Notably, the console will also offer the Zelda series’ two major installments: Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild.
Additionally, the storyline leading into Tears of the Kingdom will be expanded upon in a new title from Koei Tecmo Games, titled Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, anticipated for release this winter.
