NJ Dad Struggles with Identity Theft After Hackers Steal His Information

A father from New Jersey, known as Dan, has reported an alarming incident of identity theft that began in late September. He has since been engaged in a relentless fight to reclaim his identity following an extensive breach that has significantly disrupted his life.

In a recent interview with CBS News New York, Dan shared his unsettling experience of how fraudsters accessed both his and his wife’s accounts concurrently. He disclosed, “Someone hacked into my personal bank account, withdrew money, and applied for a loan.” The extent of the breach was staggering—he revealed that they had submitted applications for 18 credit cards under his name. Before this debacle, Dan had maintained a strong credit score.

The hackers’ intrusion did not stop with financial accounts; they accessed his family’s email addresses, cell phones, and landline, sending unsolicited packages and even a menacing text stating, “I am watching you.”

According to the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) latest report, the United States saw over a million identity theft incidents in 2023, which made up nearly 20% of all fraud complaints submitted to the agency.

Dan remains uncertain about how the hackers initially accessed their accounts, though he has speculated that a recent event might be a clue. His wife had an issue at a gas station where her credit card was reportedly retained for an unusually long time during a transaction. Moreover, he suspects that a new camera app he downloaded from Amazon, which originated in China, could have led to the breach. “Less than 24 hours after I downloaded the app, it was chaos,” he remarked. Following Dan’s report, Amazon indicated that they have restricted sales of that particular camera pending an investigation.

The incident escalated when the hackers altered the home address linked to Dan’s accounts. Instead of their actual home address, they redirected it to a package delivery location in Jersey City. Investigative efforts to get in touch with this delivery store yielded no responses.

Brett Johnson, a former cybercriminal, discussed the intricate nature of these identity theft schemes. He posited that the perpetrators likely purchased Dan’s personal information from the dark web before gaining access to his devices. “A complete identity profile these days can cost anywhere from $30 to $180,” Johnson explained. “The process of a SIM swap, where they switch the victim’s phone number to a device they control, is alarmingly simple.”

Despite Dan reaching out to both law enforcement and the FTC, he reported that the investigation remains stagnant.
