Self-Defense Ruling in Tailgating Shooting Incident
DETROIT (AP) — A shooting incident that resulted in the deaths of two individuals at a popular tailgating venue following the latest Detroit Lions game has been ruled as an act of self-defense. Authorities announced on Wednesday that the shooter would not face any charges.
Wayne County prosecutor Kym Worthy expressed her sorrow for the lives lost during what should have been a festive event, remarking, “It is absolutely tragic that during all the fun and merrymaking at a Lions tailgate that two lives were lost.”
The shooter, a licensed concealed carry permit holder aged 40, reportedly discharged his weapon after feeling threatened by 25-year-old Jalen Welch, who had brandished a firearm during a confrontation at Eastern Market, a well-known open-air market in the area. According to police reports, Welch was struck in the head by the shot, and the same bullet tragically hit a 40-year-old bystander, Rayshawn Palmer, who was attempting to mediate the situation.
Initial police statements suggested that two shots had been fired, but further investigation clarified that only one round was discharged.
“It could have been any one of us,” Worthy stated, emphasizing the unpredictability of the circumstances. She confirmed that a thorough examination of the relevant laws revealed no grounds for a charge that could be substantiated in court.
Meanwhile, the Lions were coming off a close match where they faced a setback against Tampa Bay, losing by a score of 20-16 at Ford Field, just moments before the incident unfolded nearby.
