North Richland Hills Survivor Shares Harrowing Story of Sex Trafficking

NORTH TEXAS — An 18-year-old survivor of sex trafficking is publicly detailing her traumatic experience for the first time, following a widely reported incident that began with her disappearance during a Dallas Mavericks game.

Natalee Cramer, now celebrating her first birthday at home after two years, reflects on her harrowing ordeal that began in April 2022. At just 15, she vanished from her seat at the American Airlines Center and was not located until ten days later, having been found with traffickers in Oklahoma.

“It’s important to share my story so that I can inspire others and help them find their voices,” Cramer remarked, addressing her newfound strength.

In her candid conversation, Cramer expressed her journey from weakness to empowerment. “I am no longer afraid. It feels powerful to say that,” she shared. “A year ago, I never envisioned myself speaking out like this. I’m proud of how far I’ve come.”

The fateful evening of April 8, 2022, saw Cramer and her father at the Mavericks game. After stepping away to visit the restroom, she did not return. Her absence quickly became a national news story, amplified by surveillance footage indicating her last known moments with two men at the arena.

Feeling overwhelmed with anxiety, Cramer reflected on her state of mind that night. She was grappling with issues related to anxiety and substance use, which influenced her decisions. “I was searching for something to calm my nerves,” she admitted.

After encountering one of the men in the parking garage, things spiraled downward. “I thought he was alone, but he wasn’t. He introduced drugs into the mix and took control of the situation,” Cramer recounted. The reality of her circumstances soon set in, but she felt impaired and unable to resist their intentions.

Much of her recollection from that night and the subsequent ten days remains foggy, but the painful memories are slowly resurfacing. Cramer revealed harrowing details, including experiences of rape and manipulation during her captivity.

Desperation led her parents to hire a private investigator who quickly uncovered adult advertisements for Cramer online, prompting them to alert authorities in Oklahoma. Meanwhile, Cramer was blissfully unaware, caught up in the trauma and confusion that clouded her judgment about seeking help.

“I didn’t think to reach for a phone. My priorities were in disarray,” she confessed. The intensity of her addiction at that time overshadowed her connection to her family and the potential for escape.

Miraculously, ten days after her abduction, a police officer found her wandering outside an apartment complex, an emotional moment that marked the beginning of her healing journey. “I was desperate, praying for someone to rescue me when help finally arrived,” Cramer expressed, choking back tears as she recounted this pivotal moment.

Two and a half years later, Cramer has attributed much of her recovery to faith, therapy, and the companionship of her dog, Gunnar. “He was my reason to get up every day and move forward. He didn’t know my struggles, but his presence transformed my life,” she said, highlighting the significance of her bond with her pet in her healing process.

“I’m incredibly grateful to be here today,” Cramer stated, recognizing the chilling reality that many others still face similar threats. “It’s crucial to understand that these experiences are real and happen every day. You must know it can happen to anyone.”

With a clear message for other victims, Cramer urged, “Don’t lose hope. Your past doesn’t define you. Embrace your journey and recognize that it’s not your fault.” Her resolve to share her story continues, as she aims to advocate for others who have felt voiceless.

In her ongoing journey, Cramer is working towards obtaining her GED and aspires to enroll in veterinary school, marking a hopeful path ahead. She insists that her self-worth is on the rise as she approaches her goals.

In collaboration with her family, Cramer established a non-profit organization called Aisling for Life, aimed at providing resources for victims of sexual assault and trafficking. The name, rooted in the Irish word for “dream,” symbolizes her vision for change and support.

Despite the progress, there’s an ongoing need for justice, as several individuals were convicted in relation to her case, although one suspect remains free following dropped charges by Dallas investigators.
