What you need to know

NotebookLM users can now streamline their research process with an innovative Discover sources feature that automates the task of sourcing information from the web. This enhancement, announced by Google and available starting today, eliminates the need for users to manually search for references related to their projects.

NotebookLM serves as an AI-driven notebook designed to assist users in studying and understanding a wide range of subjects. This tool allows for the upload of diverse content types, referred to as sources, which may include documents, notes, or web pages. With the introduction of the Discover sources functionality, users can now have relevant links sourced automatically as they work on their NotebookLM projects, as highlighted in Google’s official blog post.

This new feature leverages the capabilities of Google AI and the Gemini system to enhance the sourcing process within NotebookLM projects. Once users click the Discover sources button, they can input details about their project topic. The tool then conducts an extensive search and compiles relevant web sources for the user.

According to Google, “NotebookLM gathers hundreds of potential web sources in seconds,” analyzing them to identify the most pertinent information for the specified topic. Users receive up to ten source recommendations, each accompanied by an annotated summary that explains its relevance.

By selecting the suggested sources, they can be added to the users’ NotebookLM project, enriching the context of the work. These sources can be utilized in Briefing Docs, FAQs, and Audio Overviews, and are accessible for reading, note-taking, and citation. Additionally, users can engage with AI through a chatbot interface to discuss these recommended sources further.

In a nod to the playful nature of Google Search’s I’m feeling lucky function, NotebookLM now features an option called I’m feeling curious. This feature generates sources on random topics, providing users with a unique way to experience the source discovery capabilities in action.

Google describes the Discover sources feature as the beginning of a suite of enhancements for NotebookLM that will utilize Gemini’s power to effectively locate and collate relevant sources for users’ notebooks.

This feature will be made available to all users of NotebookLM, irrespective of whether they are on the free or paid plans, and the rollout begins today. As the launch progresses, it may take up to a week for all users to gain access to this new capability.
