In response to the Trump administration’s ongoing efforts to eliminate federal funding for public broadcasting, NPR is encouraging its member stations to reach out to their congressional representatives. This push follows news reports regarding an imminent rescissions package being sent to Capitol Hill, anticipated to occur earlier than initially expected.
A recent memo, first reported by The New York Times, highlighted NPR’s call for urgent action, moving timelines for stakeholder communications forward in light of the White House’s plans. NPR’s Policy and Representation team has provided new templates for stations to activate communication with stakeholders, urging them to deliver their letters to lawmakers by May 2. The memo emphasized the importance of engaging various community members, including Board members, volunteers, and local business leaders, to voice their support for public stations and opposition to funding cuts.

The ongoing budget discussions have fueled a significant concern among public media organizations, with NPR actively coordinating efforts with Protect My Public Media to mobilize supporters. The memo suggested utilizing on-air scripts available through the PMPM Partner Portal for effective messaging and called for stations to keep the national office informed about their outreach efforts to lawmakers.
“We strongly urge you to communicate and meet with your Members of Congress this week, as they are more likely to be in your district during the current recess,” the memo reiterated.
PBS LEADERS WARN OF SEVERE IMPACTS IF FEDERAL FUNDING IS CUT
The scrutiny surrounding federal funding for NPR is part of a broader political debate, as some Republican lawmakers have voiced intentions to cut funding due to accusations of bias. Earlier in the month, budget director Russ Vought circulated a memo proposing significant reductions — including a notable $1.1 billion from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and a further $8.3 billion from international aid.
“The Trump Administration has prioritized cutting waste and ensuring more efficient federal spending through a variety of initiatives,” Vought stated in his correspondence to lawmakers. “Congress has shown interest in supporting these efforts and has requested the Administration to submit rescissions for swift legislative action.” The proposed budget cuts against public broadcasting are framed as part of broader efforts to target expenditure considered unnecessary.
Testifying before congressional committees, NPR CEO Katherine Maher and PBS CEO Paula Kerger faced intense questioning regarding allegations of political bias within their organizations. During the testimony, Kerger expressed deep concerns about the potential implications of losing federal funding, particularly for local PBS stations that rely heavily on federal support.
Kerger underscored the pivotal role that federal funding plays in sustaining PBS operations, stating, “The current initiatives to rescind public media funding threaten to undermine the vital services that PBS and local member stations provide to communities across the nation.” She highlighted the long-standing bipartisan support that has historically enabled PBS to deliver educational and enriching content, especially to children and rural populations.
Emphasizing the unique contributions of PBS, Kerger remarked, “Rescinding these funds would not only devastate our member stations but would also lead to a significant loss of local programming and emergency services, particularly in underserved areas.” She concluded by reiterating PBS’s commitment to addressing important societal issues and showcasing stories that might otherwise escape public attention.
