NRG Releases VALORANT Star Demon1, Opening Door for New Opportunities
In a surprising move, NRG has announced the release of North American VALORANT standout Max “Demon1” Mazanov, transitioning him from a world champion and MVP to a free agent. This decision may ignite interest from various teams eager to acquire his exceptional skills.
Demon1’s journey through 2024 has been tumultuous. He initially gained acclaim in 2023 as he joined Evil Geniuses, where his outstanding performance contributed to their championship victory. After exiting a challenging contract situation, hopes were high that his transfer to NRG would usher in a new era. However, NRG’s struggles became apparent as they failed to qualify for the Americas playoffs in the first split of the VCT, leading to Demon1 being benched mid-season in an attempt to revitalize the team’s performance. Unfortunately for both Demon1 and NRG, the changes did not yield the desired results, as they again missed the playoff cut and didn’t secure a spot in any international competitions throughout the year.
In their announcement, NRG noted, “He’s too good to keep on the bench, so we’re giving him the chance to shine elsewhere.” The organization expressed gratitude for Demon1’s contributions to the team, which is reflected in his own swift response, simply stating “LFT” in a post, signaling his openness to new opportunities.
Despite the disappointing season for NRG, Demon1’s release has raised eyebrows, particularly given the investment NRG made in bringing him and former EG teammate Ethan onboard. Former coach Chet even indicated he personally contributed to their buyouts, highlighting the team’s high expectations at the start of the year. With only Ethan, FNS, and streamer s0m remaining under contract, NRG is facing a significant roster overhaul.
Looking ahead, it appears Demon1 will attract considerable interest from teams across the VCT landscape. Given the current environment where organizations seem more open to integrating talent from outside their home regions, there is potential for him to land with a team in EMEA or the Pacific region, provided there is an appropriate fit.
Ultimately, a talent of Demon1’s caliber is rarely available in the competitive landscape, and it is likely that he will not remain a free agent for long.
