New York Republicans Propose “Peanut’s Law” Following Controversial Squirrel Euthanasia

In the wake of a tragic incident involving a popular pet squirrel named P’Nut, New York Republicans are advocating for a legislative measure aimed at enhancing animal protection. The initiative, dubbed “Peanut’s Law: The Humane Animal Protection Act,” seeks to impose a mandatory 72-hour waiting period before the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is allowed to euthanize any seized animals. Additionally, it would ensure that pet owners are granted the opportunity for a hearing prior to any action taken against their pets.

P’Nut and another squirrel, Fred, were removed from the custody of Mark and Daniela Longo on their upstate farm last October following an anonymous complaint. Both squirrels were subsequently euthanized and tested for rabies, with results indicating they were disease-free.

The popularity of P’Nut, with an impressive social media following of nearly one million fans, highlighted the deep emotional connection many have with their pets. The critter’s videos and posts showcased his life alongside the Longo family, drawing attention to the nature of pet ownership and the responsibilities that come with it.

Legal Action Considered by P’Nut’s Owners

The Longos are contemplating legal action against New York State due to the circumstances surrounding the seizure and subsequent destruction of their pets. Mark Longo expressed his emotional turmoil in response to the situation, stating, “I sit here trying not to cry, but passing this law will be a movement to make sure that animal rights are not overlooked anymore.”

The outrage over DEC’s actions became widespread soon after P’Nut’s Instagram followers caught wind of the events, with notable figures—including Elon Musk and former President Donald Trump—voicing their outrage over the killing of the family pets.

Assemblyman Jake Blumencranz, who is backing the proposed bill, emphasized the importance of fairness in such situations. “This is about due process,” he remarked, stressing that animals should not face euthanasia unless they pose an immediate danger.

P’Nut’s story resonates with many pet owners, especially since he was orphaned as a baby, saved by the Longos who nurtured him after a tragic accident claimed his mother’s life. Blumencranz underscored the innocence of P’Nut and Fred, asserting, “They were not dangerous. They were not sick. They were not wild threats roaming the streets. They were rescues—loved, nurtured, and safe.”

Supporters of “Peanut’s Law” argue that the legislation represents a sensible step towards safeguarding the welfare of animals and their owners alike. Despite the initiative, critics lament that such measures may come too late for P’Nut and Fred, urging that systemic changes are necessary to prevent future tragedies.

The outcome of this legislation could set a precedent for how animals are treated under similar circumstances in New York, adding a layer of protection to beloved pets and their owners.
