NEW YORK — NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey has resigned unexpectedly in the wake of serious allegations of sexual misconduct.
A spokesperson for the NYPD confirmed the news, stating, “Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch accepted the resignation of Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey Friday night, effective immediately. The NYPD takes all allegations of sexual misconduct seriously, and will thoroughly investigate this matter,” in a statement to CBS News New York.
As the highest-ranking uniformed officer in the New York City Police Department, Maddrey held the position of department chief since 2022.
NYPD Commissioner Appoints Interim Chiefs
In the aftermath of Maddrey’s resignation, Commissioner Tisch appointed NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell as the interim chief of department, while Chief of Transportation Philip Rivera stepped in as interim chief of patrol. Tisch emphasized the importance of these leadership roles, stating, “The NYPD works tirelessly to protect New Yorkers, and these roles are critical to keeping our communities safe.” She added, “The interim Chiefs of Department and Patrol will continue to lead the efforts to reduce crime and disorder and build public trust.”
Prior to becoming chief of department, Maddrey served as chief of patrol. His appointment to the top position came under the leadership of former Commissioner Keechant Sewell.
