Ocasio-Cortez Critiques Republican Leadership at Colorado Rally

During a rally in Greeley, Colorado, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) voiced criticism towards local Rep. Gabe Evans (R-Colo.), encouraging constituents to seek better representation.

Ocasio-Cortez kicked off her “Fighting Oligarchy” tour alongside Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and remarked, “I hear that you have a representative that has not done a town hall.” Her comments highlighted Evans’s absence from public forums in the early months of his congressional term.

“Typically, when starting a new role, you make a strong effort to engage with your community,” she added. “If this is the best representation you’re receiving, it’s clear you deserve better.”

The Congresswoman did not hold back on her critique of Evans and another local Republican, Lauren Boebert, for their recent votes supporting a Republican-backed government funding bill.

“Gabe Evans, you know that guy who hasn’t been showing up? Maybe it’s because he voted to cut Medicaid,” she pointed out, referring to the implications of the GOP plan on social welfare programs.

A report from the Congressional Budget Office, which is a nonpartisan entity, indicated that achieving the GOP funding proposal would necessitate reductions to Medicaid expenditures.

Evans is among vulnerable House Republicans that the Democratic Party has focused on in their outreach efforts. Earlier in the week, Senator Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) similarly convened a town hall in Greeley.

In response to the rally, a representative for Evans branded Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders as “extreme” in their political views.

“Democrats seem to be struggling with their identity right now, but Congressman Gabe Evans has clarity in his mission. He is committed to lowering costs, enhancing community safety, and ensuring the American Dream is attainable for all Coloradans,” the spokesperson asserted. “His practical approach sharply contrasts with the extreme anti-oil and gas stance of AOC and Bernie Sanders.”

Evans’s office highlighted that since taking office in January, they have engaged with constituents in over 300 meetings and conducted 45 press interviews.

The office further clarified that Evans did not support cuts to Medicaid. Notably, recent reports revealed that the group House Majority Forward had to retract billboards that criticized Republicans, including Evans, following a legal notice from the National Republican Congressional Committee.

According to the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, Colorado’s 8th Congressional District is currently classified as a toss-up, indicating that the political contest remains competitive.
