Off-Duty Officer Recovering After Stabbing Incident
An off-duty police officer injured in a road rage incident on Saturday has been discharged from the hospital, according to the Atlanta Police Department, as reported by Channel 2 Action News.
The events unfolded around 6 p.m. on Saturday when a Dodge Charger collided with a Chevy Silverado on Interstate 20 East near Panola Road in DeKalb County before fleeing the scene.
In pursuit of the fleeing vehicle, an off-duty officer from the metro Atlanta area tracked the Charger into Rockdale County, specifically near Salem Road, with the intention of obtaining its license plate information.
According to authorities, the driver of the Dodge Charger, identified as Justin Perry Hurst, entered a parking lot alongside the officer, leading to a confrontation between them.
The situation escalated dramatically when Hurst allegedly stabbed the officer multiple times during the heated exchange.
Emergency responders promptly transported the officer to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was reported to be alert, conscious, and breathing.
The Atlanta Police Department issued a statement on Sunday affirming their collaboration with the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office in the ongoing investigation: “While the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office is the lead in this investigation, the Atlanta Police Department stands in solidarity with them to ensure that the suspect is apprehended. We are asking anyone with information regarding the suspect’s whereabouts to please contact CrimeStoppers or the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office.”
In a subsequent statement, APD expressed relief over the officer’s condition: “We are happy to announce that the off-duty officer was released from Grady Memorial Hospital. We are wishing him a speedy and full recovery.”
