Ohio State University Suspends In-Person Classes Due to Winter Storm
Ohio State University (OSU) has made the decision to cancel in-person classes on its Columbus campus for Monday, marking the first day back following the winter break. This announcement comes in light of a winter storm advisory issued by the National Weather Service in Wilmington.
The advisory warns of significant snowfall, potentially accumulating to six inches or more, along with mixed precipitation starting Sunday and continuing through until 11:59 p.m. Monday. Counties such as Franklin, Delaware, Licking, Madison, and Union in central Ohio are facing these conditions, while Pickaway and Fairfield counties may receive even greater amounts, exceeding eight inches.
As students and faculty navigate the winter weather, images of OSU students walking across a snow-blanketed Oval on campus typically illustrate the season’s impact on student life.
According to a news alert from OSU, the anticipated storm includes accumulating snow and winds, particularly in the overnight and early morning hours in Columbus, which could create hazardous road conditions. Although in-person classes are canceled, the university has encouraged instructors to facilitate virtual synchronous classes where possible, while classes planned for online formats will proceed as scheduled.
Historically, OSU’s Columbus campus rarely suspends classes due to winter weather, having done so only 20 times since 1978, including the recent cancellation.
While in-person classes have been called off, other campus facilities will remain operational. It is expected that in-person classes will resume on Tuesday, barring any unforeseen weather developments.
