Film director Oliver Stone is set to appear before a US House of Representatives hearing on Tuesday, where legislators will discuss newly released documents concerning the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy. These documents were made public following an executive order issued by President Donald Trump.
Representative Anna Paulina Luna, who heads the Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets, indicated that the hearing will feature testimony from various witnesses who will discuss the importance of the newly unveiled files.
“Our task force is committed to uncovering the truth behind the recently released JFK documents. We aim to consult experts and connect with surviving members of investigative committees to clarify this longstanding mystery and present our discoveries to the American public,” Luna remarked.
Upon commencing his second term in January, Trump signed an order directing national intelligence and other relevant officials to devise an expedited plan for the comprehensive release of all records associated with Kennedy’s assassination.
The official collection of records pertaining to the Kennedy assassination comprises over six million pages, a significant portion of which had already been declassified prior to Trump’s directive. The assassination has traditionally been attributed to the actions of Lee Harvey Oswald, identified as the lone gunman.
Stone, known for his 1991 film “JFK,” has faced considerable backlash from historians due to his portrayal of the assassination as a product of intricate conspiratorial plots. He has consistently maintained that Kennedy’s death was not the result of a solitary shooter and has alleged involvement from certain factions within the US intelligence community.
The Justice Department, along with various federal entities, has stood by the conclusion reached in the years since that Oswald acted alone. However, opinion polls indicate that a significant number of Americans still harbor suspicions of a conspiracy surrounding Kennedy’s assassination.
Joining Stone in the hearing will be journalist and author Jefferson Morley and author James DiEugenio. Morley has announced via social media that he intends to spotlight the CIA’s comprehensive pre-assassination file on Oswald during his testimony.
Throughout his campaign, Trump pledged to enhance transparency regarding the circumstances of Kennedy’s death, reflecting a broader public interest in understanding one of the nation’s most debated historical events.
