HARRISON, N.Y. — A tragic incident occurred Thursday night when a small aircraft crashed on Interstate 684 in Westchester County, New York, resulting in the death of one individual.
According to the New York State Police, the plane was carrying two people when it went down around 7 p.m. in the town of Harrison. The aircraft reportedly came to rest in a portion of land dividing the northbound and southbound traffic lanes on the busy highway.
The identity of the deceased has not been disclosed, and information regarding the condition of the second occupant is still pending. Fortunately, authorities stated that there were no reported injuries among motorists on the ground.
Flight data indicates that the plane had taken off from Linden Airport in New Jersey, en route to Westchester County Airport, situated approximately 1.5 miles from the crash site. The aircraft is registered to Altisky Leasing One LLC, based in Smyrna, Tennessee.
Following the incident, New York State Police temporarily closed the northbound lanes at Exit 2 and the southbound lanes at Exit 3, with local detours implemented to redirect traffic. Motorists are being advised to avoid the area due to ongoing disruptions.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul released a statement regarding the crash, noting that it precipitated an aviation fuel spill. The state’s Department of Environmental Conservation is actively engaged in managing and cleaning up the spill. The Governor expressed her condolences, stating, “My heart goes out to the loved ones of those on board during this tragic incident, and I am praying for a safe recovery for the injured individual.”
