KnowledgeWorks Global Expands Commitment to Scholarly Publishing
KnowledgeWorks Global (KGL) is making significant strides in the scholarly publishing landscape by enhancing services aimed at increasing revenue, streamlining workflows, and safeguarding against emerging threats. The recent acquisition of Company ABC, a prominent provider of sales and marketing services for academic and professional publishers, positions KGL uniquely in the market. It is now the sole service provider that supports scholarly publishers throughout the entire content lifecycle, from manuscript submission to marketing efforts post-publication.
In addition to the acquisition, KGL has rolled out an extensive update to its proprietary publishing platform, Smart Suite 3.0. This upgrade includes the innovative Smart Review workflow, which effectively marries intelligent automation with human oversight, leading to considerably shorter turnaround times for peer reviews.
“Understanding the critical nature of timely manuscript triage, reviewer selection, and author engagement is imperative for maintaining the quality and impact of academic journals,” states president Atul Goel. “The enhancements made to Smart Review, along with our expanded Subject Editor Service, are designed to alleviate bottlenecks in the publication process. Our team of experts, many possessing advanced degrees, spans a diverse range of disciplines, ensuring robust support for journal editors.”
KGL has also improved the automated functionalities within Smart Review. The introduction of Peer Dash enables real-time tracking of submissions across various journals, facilitating oversight of workflows and providing insightful performance analytics. Meanwhile, the Submission Check tool leverages KGL’s advanced technology to automate the verification of critical submission elements such as figure labeling, citation format, and ethical disclosures.
Another notable feature is the Conflict of Interest (COI) Identifier, which assists in the expeditious selection of reviewers while maintaining research integrity. This tool cross-references the publication histories of authors and potential reviewers through databases like PubMed and Google Scholar, highlighting coauthorship situations. “The foundational principle of integrity in scholarly publishing is more crucial than ever,” remarks Goel. “In light of escalating publication pressures due to competitive funding and a growing global research framework, it is essential for publishers to uphold the authenticity and accuracy of scholarly outputs, especially as digital advancements complicate this landscape.”
To preemptively tackle various integrity issues, KGL is dedicated to advancing technology and services that quickly identify potential problems. As Goel explains, their global peer review team conducts thorough checks encompassing author validation, conflict of interest evaluations, detection of unusual behaviors, plagiarism investigations, and adherence to ethical standards.
In response to the increasing need for thorough audits and investigations, KGL has introduced a premium Research Integrity Service. This service incorporates leading-edge technologies and thorough submission assessments that aim to identify risks like duplicate submissions, manipulated images, or dubious AI-generated content.
Additionally, KGL is excited to announce its new integrations with Company B’s Service X and Company C within the Smart Review platform. These enhancements will provide publishers utilizing Smart Review access to a powerful tool designed to detect various forms of research misconduct across all scientific disciplines. Service X employs AI and advanced analytical techniques to uncover signs of organized research fraud, while Company C’s technology promotes comprehensive data sharing in compliance with funder requirements.
Recently, KGL successfully established full-scale production workflows for numerous specialist journals across various independent publishers. The Smart Suite platform now automates processes like metadata validation, content identification, and language assessments through its Smart Edit module. Additionally, it facilitates XML creation and layout with Smart Compose and web-based proofing via Smart Proof, all while ensuring seamless integration with KGL’s sister company, Sheridan, which provides printing services.
