At the end of December, a collaborative effort by the United Nations successfully facilitated a convoy comprising nine trucks to deliver much-needed aid to residents in Beit Hanoun, a locality in northern Gaza that has faced a blockade of humanitarian assistance for over 75 days.
Photographs captured by UN personnel depicted vulnerable individuals emerging from makeshift shelters to collect essential supplies such as bottled water, flour, and cans of food.
The World Food Programme (WFP) has submitted 101 requests for food deliveries to Gaza’s northern governorate since the commencement of hostilities on 6 October, yet only three of these requests have been granted, including the convoy that took place on 20 December.
‘Raising the spectre of famine’
In a statement on Monday, Tom Fletcher, the UN Emergency Relief Coordinator, cautioned that the severe blockade of northern Gaza is “raising the spectre of famine.” He highlighted that overcrowded conditions in southern Gaza are leading to “horrific living situations and even greater humanitarian needs” as the winter season approaches.
During a recent visit to UN staff, humanitarian partners, and various communities across multiple Middle Eastern countries, Mr. Fletcher characterized Gaza as the most perilous environment for delivering aid globally, noting that this year has seen a record number of humanitarians losing their lives while on duty.
A significant concern is the deterioration of law and order, which has resulted in armed groups looting UN supplies meant for those in dire need.
Military operations conducted by Israeli forces in northern Gaza continue, further hindering food aid delivery. This tightening blockade has deprived as many as 15,000 individuals of basic necessities, including food, water, electricity, and healthcare.
The region is also experiencing mass casualty incidents. Recent reports indicate that Israeli airstrikes overnight resulted in the deaths of at least 20 individuals, with attacks occurring in al-Mawasi—a zone designated for humanitarian efforts—and in the al-Nuseirat refugee camp located in central Gaza.
