The Oomy Zen stands out in the Oofos collection, featuring the thickest layer of Oofoam, which contributes to an exceptionally comfortable experience when wearing the shoes. According to Dr. Karthas, this comfort can also be attributed to the unique shape of the foam incorporated into the shoe design.
The elevated arch of the footbed allows for increased contact surface for the foot, which aids in evenly distributing pressure, Dr. Karthas explains. Importantly, he notes that individuals do not require high arches to benefit from wearing these shoes. Additionally, the foam cradles the heel, providing a supportive fit, and the shoe’s slight rocker shape aligns with natural walking dynamics.
The upper of the sneaker, made from a soft knit material, functions akin to a snug, supportive sock. Dr. Karthas remarked that earlier Oofos models had a looser fit, which made them less suitable for rigorous back-and-forth motions or extensive walking. In contrast, the Oomy Zen offers a more secure fit, resembling that of a traditional athletic sneaker.
Sylvian Woodward, Oofos’ senior design manager, emphasizes that the sleek slip-on design encourages users to wear the shoes outside of recovery situations, allowing for an extended recovery period post-exercise.
Fit and feel
Upon first slipping on the Oomy Zens, I experienced an immediate relief that was unprecedented. Though I don’t suffer from severe foot issues, I often endure fatigue and pain after prolonged periods of standing, as well as occasional symptoms of plantar fasciitis. The comfort prompted me to share them with friends so they could also take part in the experience.
A defining feature of the fit is the high arch of the shoe. While I can’t provide insights into its comfort for those with flat feet, I’ve seldom found such substantial support in any footwear.
The upper offers a fit reminiscent of running shoes, but with a roomier toe box and additional softness. While I wouldn’t recommend them for intense physical activities, there is ample stability and support for leisurely walks or city explorations. An added advantage: they are flexible, packable, and machine-washable.
The bottom line
The Oomy Zen has become my preferred shoe for casual use at home. They provide exceptional comfort following long runs and active days, and I’m looking forward to utilizing them as part of my recovery strategy as I prepare for marathon training later this year.
Importantly, one does not need to be an athlete to enjoy the benefits of the Oomy Zens. Dr. Karthas, who wears them in his professional setting, concurs, stating, “While Oofos are marketed for recovery, they can be beneficial for anyone, not just athletes.” He frequently recommends these shoes to individuals such as cashiers and educators who spend long hours on hard surfaces and are dealing with foot discomfort.
They serve as an ideal choice for work, casual outings, or both. If they offer the same level of comfort for you as they do for me, they are undoubtedly a worthy investment.
