Emerging Threats: AkiraBot and the Use of AI in Spam Attacks
Recent analysis by SentinelLabs highlights the evolving challenges presented by artificial intelligence in combating spam attacks aimed at websites. According to researchers Alex Delamotte and Jim Walter, the AkiraBot has utilized large language model (LLM)-generated content to create spam messages that complicate defensive measures against such intrusions. They noted, “The easiest indicators to block are the rotating set of domains used to sell the Akira and ServiceWrap SEO offerings, as there is no longer a consistent approach in the spam message contents as there were with previous campaigns selling the services of these firms.”
The operational mechanism of AkiraBot involves leveraging OpenAI’s chat API with a specific instruction set. It assigned a role to the GPT-4o-mini model, directing it to serve as a “helpful assistant that generates marketing messages.” A prompt was structured to allow the LLM to dynamically incorporate the name of the targeted website, effectively personalizing each communication.
“The resulting message includes a brief description of the targeted website, making the message seem curated,” the researchers explained. This personalization is significant; unlike previous spam techniques that relied on uniform messages that could easily be filtered out, the LLM-generated content presents a unique challenge by producing distinctive messages for each recipient. This approach renders traditional spam filtering tactics less effective.
In their research, SentinelLabs accessed log files left behind by AkiraBot, which provided insights into its spam campaign’s effectiveness. Their findings revealed that from September 2024 to January of the following year, over 80,000 unique messages had been successfully delivered to various websites. In stark contrast, attempts to target around 11,000 domains were unsuccessful. OpenAI acknowledged the report and reiterated that the misuse of its chatbot functions in such activities violates its terms of service.
