OpenAI has initiated a legal countersuit against Elon Musk, asserting that his ongoing efforts to undermine the company appear to be motivated by a desire for personal gain rather than a legitimate concern for its mission. In a statement shared on X, OpenAI accused Musk of employing “bad-faith tactics” aimed at destabilizing the organization and attempting to seize control over critical advancements in artificial intelligence.
The legal documents filed by OpenAI’s attorneys contend that Musk’s series of aggressive actions against the company, including a recent alleged fake takeover attempt, must cease immediately. They seek a court injunction to prevent any further actions Musk may take which they classify as unlawful and detrimental, additionally holding him accountable for any harm he has already inflicted on the organization.
Musk, one of OpenAI’s co-founders, previously filed a lawsuit last year aimed at compelling the organization to adhere to its original mission of developing artificial general intelligence (AGI) that benefits humanity broadly, rather than focusing on profit generation. Nilay Patel, editor-in-chief at The Verge, has openly criticized Musk’s legal maneuvers, characterizing them as “hilariously bad.”
In a notable move earlier this year, Musk proposed a staggering $97.4 billion acquisition of OpenAI, asserting that the organization needed to refocus on its foundational principles of open-source development and safety. However, this offer was unanimously rejected by OpenAI’s board, which referred to the bid as a “sham” in their latest legal filing.
